Coffee has been around since the early 1800s in Dickson, Tennessee. One of the first coffeehouses in the area was The Coffee House, which opened in 1817. It was located on Main Street between Elm and Patton streets. Over time, other coffeehouses and businesses cropped up throughout Dickson, including The Coffee House & Bar (1830-1836), The Coffee House (1837-1907), The Dutchman's Tavern & Café (1908-1960), and finally The Starbuck's Coffee Shop (1960-present). The history of high quality coffee is tightly intertwined with that of Dickson itself. From its earliest days as a small town, Dickson has been committed to promoting healthy living through its cafes and restaurants. In fact, many of today’s leading coffee brands – Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Peet’s – were founded or grew large in Dickson due to their commitment to local sourcing and sustainable practices. Dickson, Tennessee is a small town located in the rural area of Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. Dickson is named after General John C. Dickson who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant. The community was founded by white settlers in 1872, and development continued until 1954 when it became part of the state of Tennessee. Today, Dickson remains a small town with strong ties to its history and people. The earliest residents of Dickson were descendants of Scots-Irish farmers who had come to America during the early 1800s. family names such as Coffey, Doherty, McNaught, McNeill, and Weir were often used to identify families in early America because their forebears had lived there for many years or had been brought over as slaves. Many of these families remained active in business and social life into the 20th century; some even returned to Scotland after World War II to continue their farming heritage. In 1872, white settlers arrived in what is now Dickson from nearby Clarksville looking for land that could be leased from the Cherokee Nation for agriculture purposes (the Cherokees were then living on Chickamauga Mountain). The first houses were built around this time; however, it wasn't until 1882 that a store was opened which would become one of the most popular attractions in town. By 1904 there were five Schools; two churches (one Methodist), four stores (including oneowned by Joplin Brothers), three blacksmiths/armorers shops (one belonging to James Fenton), two newspapers (one Democrat and one Republican), and two schools - one public and one private - all serving local residents including children up through grade school age. By 1926 there were six businesses operating: three groceries/dairy stores (Erie Hardware Company & Country Store No 2 & 3 operated by Mrs Eileen McGeegan & father Frank McGeegan since 1922), four restaurants (Caterpillar’s Barbecue House & Saloon No 1 Operated by Wm Gentry since 1924; Joe’s Pizza Shop no longer open but still exists inside building next door closed up ~1927; Donnie’s Western Wearnoppe operated 1935-1945 by Henery Kapp) four cotton ginners producing fabric for clothing Next door an oil well giving off gas from underground until 1940 when it went dry – also refers back to pioneer days when supplies came down via wagon road vernacular architecture typical throughout eastern TN today followed log homes style with gable end added . . . All types of crops grown including corn raised on large lots irrigated using ditches dug near water tower several miles north ____________________________________ The following year saw another important milestone as Dickson became Knox County's second incorporated municipality with a vote by citizens overwhelmingly approving $5 per capita income limit on property qualifications necessary for voting becoming effective January 1st 1928 VoluntarilyAllowed any person over 21 years old owning 3 or more contiguous acres within easy commuting distance thereof if not already Minority Businessmen adjusting township limits every 5 years thereafter while continuing day services taking place at Masonic Hall daily except Sundays

Coffee also found its way into Spanish-speaking areas through Christopher Columbus' voyage when he brought home some fresh bean residue from his trip to Asia in 1493-94! Dickson was founded by James Dickson in 1805 as an agricultural village on the banks of the Cumberland River. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on one of the principal transportation routes between Nashville and Birmingham. By 1860, Dickson had become a city with a population of over 5,000 people. In 1881, Dickson became a county seat and began to develop into a major manufacturing center for cotton and other crops. The arrival of railroads in the early 20th century resulted in increased trade and business opportunities for Dicksonians. Today, Dickson remains an important local cultural and economic center with strong ties to its rural residents.
