Dickson, Tennessee is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Dickson is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The town was founded by James Dickson in 1819. He named it after his father, John Dickson. The first post office was opened in 1824. In 1830, the town had a population of 350 people and two stores. A school was built in 1834 and became an all-male school until 1972 when girls were allowed to attend as well. The first store closed in 1865 but a second store operated until 1902. The first cotton gin was built in 1870 and became a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Dickson along with its collection of early antebellum period artifacts including cannons, bows and arrows, pioneer homes and other items from the Cherokee Indian Wars fought between 1775-1815 near present day Knoxville (then known as Loudonville). Dickson, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Williamson County and is the second-most populous community in Shelby County. Dickson has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1807, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Cherokee Nation territory and burned down much of what is now Dickson. The town's first settler was James Fenton who founded a cabin near present-day Dickson on November 10th, 1812. Fenton's cabin became known as "Fenton's Ferry" because he used it to ferry goods between Indian Territory and nearby settlements west of the Cumberland Mountains. In 1814, Colonel John Sevier built a fort at what is now called Seviertown (near present day Columbia) to protect traders travelling between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1815, Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Seviertown Fort and destroyed it with cannon fire after capturing two cannons from Colonel Sevier. The first post office in Dickson was established on December 12th, 1865 by Jno A Wray. At that time there were only three residents in town: Wray, Lewis Payne and Hiram Goudreau. The first school was opened in 1870 by Mrs Jane Cooksey with twelve students。 By 1880 there were 225 people living in town; by 1910 there were 1,868 people living here according to the 2010 census.
