Crossville is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Crossville is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Nashville Metropolitan Area. The name "Crossville" comes from two early settlers, James Cross and his wife Rachelle Cross. At first they called their farm "The Crossing," but later changed it to "Crossville" because of its location on the crossing of two rivers. The town began as a small settlement on July 4, 1820 by seven men who had come overland from Kentucky led by Major David Campbell. On October 8 of that year, General Andrew Johnson's Corps of Volunteers encampment was attacked by 6 Cherokee Indians northwest of present-day Crossville. Five white men were killed and eight Indian prisoners were taken prisoner; these events are known as the Battle of Lookout Mountain. The original town site was east of present-day Crossville on what is now State Route 706B. In 1824, John Henson built a log cabin near the intersection of SR 706E (now US 27) and SR 914 (now Business Loop I-5). He named it "Hensons Place." A post office was established at this location in 1825, and remained in operation until 1865. By 1830 there were about fifty people living in Crossville; by 1840 there were only six residents remaining within the limits established for the community when it formed chartered second May 14th election under new government ordinance passed unanimously at meeting held in courthouse square following adjourned session to consider resolutions approved January 3rd establishing public school system with county seat at Henderson City adjacent thereto.) The town was originally named Carthage after the capital of ancient Carthage, but it was renamed Crossville because of a crossroads on U.S. Route 4 that served as a junction for travelers coming from North Carolina and Georgia. The early settlers were Methodists who built churches and schools in Crossville and other nearby towns during the mid-19th century. In 1837, Methodist missionaries from Georgia arrived inCrossville with plans to start a new church there. They quickly realized that this would be an important stop on their journey westward into what would become America.
