Crossville is a town in McNairy County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Crossville was founded in 1852 by General John Hogg and his family as a settlement on the Cumberland River. In 1875, Crossville became one of three towns chartered by the General Assembly of Tennessee to provide services for slaves freed during the Civil War. The town's first mayor was Dr. James Millington. The name "Crossville" comes from an early white settler's usage of it to refer to all points along the river where cotton could be grown: both upriver and downriver from where Crossville now stands. By 1840, some 50 families had moved into what is now Crossville from nearby Farmington, Kentucky; within a few years more than 100 people lived there permanently or for several years while they developed landholdings and built homes. By 1860 most of this growth had stopped because so many Kentuckians had gone to war with southern Unionists that cotton production had come to a standstill; but by 1870 about 400 people still lived in Crossville—almost all farmers who grew cornstalks (maize) and other products for export near Memphis and Nashville. In 1875, when slavery was abolished in Tennessee following the American Civil War,Crossville became one of three towns chartered by the General Assembly of Tennessee to provide services for slaves freed during the war - an event which has been commemorated annually since then with a ceremony at which local dignitaries participate (the "Freedman's Festival").
