The Crossville Navy Yard was one of the most significant naval facilities in the United States during World War II. It served as a navy center for research and development, as well as storage for ships and ammunition. The yard also produced warships such as USS Tennessee (BB-12) and USS Indianapolis (CV-27). Naval vessels were first built at the Crossville Navy Yard in 1853. The first American battleship, CSS Virginia, was launched here on December 3rd, 1854. In 1862, theyard was renamed Naval Shipbuilding Yards after Rear Admiral John Davenport Sears who had led the development ofUSS Maine (BB-4), USS New York (CL-2) and USS Constitution (CV-14). By 1865, NASY had built 11 ships including CSS Alabama (1862), CSS Florida (1863), HMS Euryalus(1863), LPD(Litigation Destroyer) Somers(1865), SS Drummond(1868), LPD(Litigation Cruiser) Nepean(1870), SS Fort Mackenzie(1872),SS Donelson(1876). During World War II, NASY built over 100 warships including 10 Battle Cruisers and 30 torpedo boats. Some of these vessels became obsolete or were retired after hostilities ended but many continued to serve through World War III. Many Crossville sailors also fought in Europe during WWII with distinction earning medals for their service including Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal. After the war ended NASY operated out of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until it closed in 1972. Today there is only a smallVisitor Center remaining which is open for tours once per week from 9am to 4pm.

Smith and operated until it failed in 1920; this led to cross-country trucking being developed to move goods from warehouses to local farms more efficiently than using wagons or horses

Crossville is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Crossville was founded in 1868 as a post office and early agricultural community by Scots-Irish settlers from Ireland. The town was renamed Crossville after Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest on November 16, 1865. The first store in Crossville opened on Main Street in 1868. In 1875, the Post Office moved to its present location on Court Street and became a general mercantile store. The first school inCrossvillewas established in 1876 and operated for one year before closing due to lack of funds. A second school was built and operated until 1909 when it burned down. In 1907, the Knox County courthouse was built on Main Street and served as the town's main business district until it burned down in 1951. Today, the courthouse remains standing but has been converted into apartments and offices.. In 1916, an irrigation pipeline supplying water to farmers near Chattanooga was constructed by Joplin Electric Power Company through what is now known as Midtown Crossing mallards (a type of bird). After construction began, residents of Crossville started usingJoplin's water rather than waiting for deliveries from local mills which had been struggling with low demand during World War I because of wartime rationing . By 1919 there were more than 100 businesses operating out of Crossville with a population of 2200 people During World War II local industries produced munitions such as ammunition plants used by both American and British forces; gasoline refineries that produced kerosene for enemy aircraft; cross-country track manufacturing at nearby Muscle Shoals Lake; cottonseed oil production at Kingsport; steel fabrication at Beechworth Plant #2 located just outside downtown CrossVILLE
