Crossville is a small town located in the county seat of Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,615 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Sandy Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General Jesus Christ Cross and his family in 1813 as a log cabin community on the confluence of the Chickamauga River and Hiwassee River. In 1838, Crossville became an agricultural village when three families pooled their land to form the Village of Crossville Mills. When Canals were built through Marshall County in 1849-1850, crosswise transportation became more important so that goods could be moved between river communities and cotton plantations throughout Southeast Tennessee. By 1860, most of what is now Crossville had been developed as a small town with a Presbyterian church, schoolhouse, post office (1860), two hotels (1861), two stores (1862-64), one cotton gin ( 1865) and several homes. By 1880, there were no hotel or other commercial establishments remaining inCrossville except for one grocery store which closed in 1931. The last resident died in 1980s after serving many years as Postmaster/Mgr./Church Elder for First Presbyterian Church of Crossville

The town was originally a small settlement with only a few residents, but it grew quickly thanks to its location on the Cumberland River. In 1848, Crossville became the county seat of Knox County and has since been one of the most populous communities in the county. Today, Crossville is a suburb of Nashville and is home to many high-tech companies as well as government agencies such as the Knox County Courthouse and Jail. Crossville's history can be traced back to 1819 when Captain James Cross of the U.S. Navy came ashore at what is now Crossville after battle against Native Americans near present-day Chattanooga. After his return from war, cross offered his services to Knox County as a landowner and constable. He soon built a cabin on what is now Evergreen Drive and began trading goods with local farmers while residing in his own house until he purchased 2,000 acres (8 km2) east of present day Crossville in 1828 for $5 per acre ($160 total). This purchase allowed him to build what would become one of Tennessee's largest cotton plantations - known today as White Sands Plantation - which processed more than 300 bales (1 metric ton) of raw cotton each week during its peak production years between 1830 and 1840! In addition to his plantation work, Captain James also served terms as mayor (1829-30), justice of Peace (1831), treasurer (1832-33), state representative from District 8 (1834-36), captain generalof militia for Knox County (1838-39), member pro tem for lower chamber in House Of Representatives bastion defense measure number 1 . By 1850, White Sands had grown too large for Captain James' liking so he sold it off piecemeal over several years starting around 1850 until condemnation proceedings were finally brought against it by federal authorities in 1852 claiming that it was an "unlicensed slave business." However, due to public outcry resulting from this controversy - including boycotts by some citizens - White Sands eventually resumed operations under new management less than two months later! The growth & success of White Sands led Captains James & John Denton to open their own plantations adjacent called Devils Lake Plantations along both sides OF Big Sandy Creek about 4 miles W side Of Eastern TN Sqn & 6 miles E side OF Western TN Sqn about 7 miles NW corner Of Western TN sqn These Plantations started out very slowly but iin time became very successful doing lots o good trade with Indians

In 1840, the United States government granted Crossville a charter as a city. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming one of Tennessee's most important towns. In 1865,Crossville became part of Johnson County when it was created from parts of Davidson and Sumner counties. During World War II, Crossville served as an Army Air Forces base supplying munitions to Allied forces in Europe. After the war, the city continued to grow, becoming known for its array of shopping malls and large housing developments. Today, Crossville is home to some of the largest shopping centers in Tennessee and has become an important cultural center for the region.
