The volunteer fire department responded to these emergencies with their own ambulances until 1978 when they became a part of the Knox County EMS system. Crossville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It has a post office and ZIP code of 38601. Crossville is located about 20 miles east of Nashville and about 25 miles southwest of Chattanooga. The crossroads at which the town was founded are still the focus of much activity today. The first settler in what became Crossville was James Cone in 1817. Cone had come overland from Georgia and founded Muscle Shoals, Alabama on his arrival in Crossville on July 1, 1817. He named his settlement after his brother-in-law's family name, Cross (meaning "crossroads"). In 1830, John Witherspoon moved to Crossville from Lebanon and began trading goods with the Cherokee Indians near present day downtown Crossville. Witherspoon constructed a log cabin here on Main Street in 1831 as his business headquarters. He also started an agricultural store here that continued until 1840 when he moved to new land east of town to open a farm called Allen Family Farmstead (later renamed Agricultural Hall). In 1844 Jepson Price opened his own mercantile store on High Street just south of Interstate 40 exit 9A across from where later Uptown Place shopping mall would be built. Price carried out many early pioneer traditions including having daily Sabbath services at his store while other stores did not start stocking groceries until after 1850 Oak Ridge Baptist Church organized in nearby Oak Ridge Village began serving as their pastor in 1865 when Revs Elisha Hunt and Simeon Boren purchased the church building from Price's widow Anna Pritchard for $2,500+. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson arrived at nearby Winchester to campaign for president and discovered that crossroads were important to transportation routes between Nashville and Charleston, South Carolina. When he learned of this importance, he ordered Surveyor-General John Sevier to redesignate two crossroads nearCrossville as Jackson Roads so that travelers could better connect these two important points during his travels throughout Tennessee. This event helped spur development of Crossville from a small frontier settlement into one of the most important communities in Williamson County during its early days (1819-1835).
