Crossville is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The crossroads of Crossville and Uniontown are main commercial and transportation hubs in the town. Crossville also has two high schools - Crossville High School and Liberty High School - as well as one college, Appalachian State University. The first settler in what is now Crossville was David Dixon in 1818. A post office called Dixon was established in 1824, and remained operational until 1870. In 1871, the community name was changed to Crossville after General Andrew Jackson's visit to the area. The first store opened in 1865. Wilson Brothers Boot Shop became a major commercial center for the community during this time with its large displays of boots on display inside and outside of its doors. By 1890, Overmountain Coal had become one of the most important businesses inCrossville with operations totaling more than $1 million annually including production at three mines across counties then within Williamson County: Overmountain coal mine on Main Street; South Mountain coal mine on Third Street near I-20 exit 20; and West Mountain coal mine on First Street near US- 40 exit 240 (now known as Eastside Road). Crossville is a town in Henderson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. Crossville is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by General James H. Cross and his wife Sarah on November 3, 1811 as a small farming community known as "X" for Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The first post office in Crossville was established on December 12, 1813. The name of the original settlement may have been derived from the Creek word "k-x-w-i-t", meaning "a place where goods are bought and sold." In 1836, Colonel John Bellamy organized what became the Volunteer Infantry Regiment under command of Major General James H. Ford to fight against Andrew Jackson's American Civil War campaign in West Tennessee. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War, Crossville became an important center for African American Reconstruction in Tennessee. Many freedmen from Alabama moved to Crossville because they found workable fields here and because there were no white people living near them who would not rent or sell them out to black settlers if they desired land ownership themselves. After cross streets were rechristened after blackGT leaders such as Booker T Washington and SNCC activist Angela Davis, much social progress had been made for African Americans in Crossville by this point; however some residents still harbored racist attitudes towards those who had come to help rebuild their society post-war. This began to change gradually over time as more residents realized that many of these new arrivals were just seeking opportunity and education not revenge or retribution against whites who had treated them poorly during the war era
The first crossville was settled in 1809. The town was named for General Samuel Cross, a Revolutionary War hero and the founder of the city. The town grew rapidly after it was granted incorporation in 1814. In 1870, crossville became the county seat of Union County. In 1914, crossville joined the Tennessee Valley Authority and lost its municipal status.
