The history of coffee in Crossville, Tennessee begins with the Dutch. The Dutch were first to grow coffee and trade it with other countries. Coffee was eventually exported to England and France. In 1795, a French planter named Nicholas-Jacques Demers acquired land near Crossville in what is now known as Demers Park. He began growing coffee and exporting it to Europe. In 1829, the Holland family purchased the farm from Nicolas-Jacques Demers and continued to produce coffee until 1949. From 1829 until 1949, the Holland family ran Crossville's only grocery store which sold a variety of groceries including tea, cigarettes, breads, milk, eggs and other perishables. In 1893, two men by the name of Quiggles bought the store from the Holland family and changed its name to Coffee House. They operated it as a café for six years before selling it in 1907 to J.W. Hildebrandt who renamed it Crossville CoffeeHouse Incorporated (CHCI). In 1951, HCBI merged with Jughead Coffee & Tea Company (JCT) which had been founded two years earlier by John Jughead Sr., one ofCrossville's most prominent businessmen at that time. The merger made HCBI one of the largest coffee companies in America at that time. HCBI continue producing quality coffees under their own brand until 1984 when they merged with Peet's Coffee Company effective January 1st that year resulting in an ownership change within HCBI whereby Quiggles became owner-operator (O&O) of all Crossville operations rather than just CHCI head office being run by Quiggles himself as before which had been done through his son Donnie Quiggles' managementorship since 1978). Crossville is an unincorporated community in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The community is located on the bottom of a hill at the intersection of two roads, Spring Street and Indian Bend Road. It was named for James A. Cross, a banker who founded the town in 1881. The first settlers in Crossville were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1851. By 1865, the population of Crossville had increased to ten people. In that year, James A. Cross opened a general store and post office at what is now known as the corner of Indian Bend and Spring Streets. The store became one of the most successful businesses in Crossville until it closed its doors in 1925. Crossville experienced growth during World War II when many local families helped provide munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, cross-country railroad transportation became available which led to more people moving to Crossville; by 1950, there were twenty-five residents living in Crossville. During the 1970s and 1980s, cross-country highway construction caused increased traffic congestion aroundCrossville; this resulted in several businesses closing their doors including J's Paper Store and Mr.'s Pizza).
