Cookeville is a small town in Henderson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area.
The first white person to come to Cookeville was David Folsom who arrived in 1811. He built himself a cabin on the edge of town and started trading with the Indians. In 1816, he married Anna Maria Greenleaf and they set up a farm on what is now University Boulevard southeast of downtown Cookeville. The couple had three children: John (1817-1875), James (1820-1912) and Anna Maria (1824-1900).
In 1835, Job Cooke founded Cookeville Academy which became one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Tennessee. The Academy educated many future governors and senators including Andrew Johnson, Norris Cole and Philander Knox Polk among others.
John Crouch served as Mayor of Cookeville from 1907 to 1909; he was also an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1911 but won election as Mayor pro tempore. In 1916, cokevenutland native Averil Harriman became First Lady of America after she married Woodrow Wilson; she moved back to Cookeville when her husband took office in Washington D.C.. MrsHarriman would later become one of the most powerful women in American history as First Lady of New York City from 1945-1963 before her death at 82 years old on November 25th, 2009.
The date November 25th has been noted by some as being incorrectly reported as November 30th; however this may be attributable to an incorrect source citation given by historian Dr Laura Martin.

Cookeville is a town in upper Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,653 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is the seat of Grant County. It was founded in 1801 by John Cooke and named for him. The town was first occupied by Native Americans who hunted white game and gathered wild fruit.
The first post office in Cookeville was established on November 15, 1802, by James Henshaw. In 1807, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area during his retreat from Chattanooga to Knoxville after battle against the forces of Cherokee Chief Maskatochee. When he reached Cookeville, Jackson ordered his troops to stop and encamp there until he could reach Chattanooga with reinforcements. As a result of this event, Cookeville became known as "Jackson's Valley".
In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Union forces near Knoxville, Cookeville played an important role in the skirmish that followed. A large number of Confederate soldiers were stationed here before they retreated back towards Chattanooga; some of them camped overnight next to the old Post Office building which still stands today (although it has been remodeled several times). After the battle ended, most Confederates withdrew eastward intoKnox County while a few surrendered to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at nearby Lookout Mountain ().
After Tennessee seceded from the United States in 1861, many residents left Cookeville for Kentucky or North Carolina because of their political beliefs—among them Edward Everett Hale (the only Senator from Massachusetts who voted against secession) and William Seward (the Secretary of State nominee who lost to Abraham Lincoln). However, many others stayed behind because they felt that Tennesseans had no right to leave their state without its consent and because they saw no other opportunity for development within radius around Knoxvill
Cookeville was founded in 1797. It became a town in 1880 and an incorporated municipality in 1903. The population of Cookeville was 21,521 at the 2010 census.
