Cookeville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2000 census. It lies about 20 miles east of Nashville on the Cumberland River and is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Cookeville was founded by General David Cooke in 1796 as a trading post on the bluff overlooking the Cumberland River. A dam was built to generate power for local mills in 1876 and development began around that time. The city limits were expanded in 1907 to encompass all of what is now Davidson County. The downtown district, which includes most of Cookeville's commercial areas and several thousand housing units, has been designated a National Historic Landmark. genealogy buffs will want to check out the Tennessee Valley Genealogical Society Museum next door; it has over 2,000 items from various eras including African American slave records and early settler minutes from Knoxville Township. Cookeville was a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, until the late 1800s. It was located on the Cumberland River and had a population of about 1,000 people at its peak. Cookeville became famous for its coal mines, which produced many items such as textiles, shoes, and firearms. The mine fields also supplied fuel for local mills and factories. The area also grew tobacco crops. The first Europeans to visit Cookeville were traders from Virginia in 1799. They reported that the area looked like a "wilderness." But by 1809, some settlers had started to develop the land around Cookeville into what is now the town of Cookeville. In 1814, residents voted to name their town after General Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). In 1819-20, General James Kenedy built a mill here on the Cumberland River. That mill was used until 1861 when it was destroyed by fire. The mill site is still being searched for today because it may have been used as part of an early prison or detention center. After the Civil War ended in 1865, most of the coal mines closed down due to lack of competition from other mining companies or technological advances. However, some continue operating today as tourist attractions or research centers specific to coal mining history and culture
Cookeville is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Cookeville was founded on November 3, 1831 by Colonel John Cooke and Dr. James Hensley as a small town named for him and his father-in-law General Andrew Jackson. The first post office in Cookeville was established on December 12, 1835. On December 16, 1839, the name of the city was changed to its current name after General William T. Sherman's march through Tennessee from Chattanooga to Knoxville which resulted in much hard fighting between Union forces and Confederate troops along the way. The Battle of Marion Bridge took place on July 4th near present day Conway County when Union forces led by Sherman attacked Confederate positions around that bridge while Confederates counterattacked with artillery and infantry support. On February 9th 1861 Coal River Affair occurred when Federal troops under Lieutenant Colonel Nelson Aiken raided a coal mine near present day Mount Juliet while Confederate cavalry protected the mine entrance from federal soldiers who were seeking access tocoal supplies that had been smuggled into the area by Union forces under Major general John Custer weeks earlier during his ill-fated campaign against Ulysses S Grant in western Kentucky known as "Custer's Last Campaign". After attacking several trucks loaded with coal belonging to local miners an engagement ensued resulting in three dead Federal soldiers and twenty wounded Confederates before General Aiken retreated without Casualties despite heavy losses for his force including two Killed, six Wounded & ten Captured men all of whom are still missing today according to US Army records
