He had amassed a large collection of war-related memorabilia, including items from both the Union and Confederate armies. His store was one of several which supplied goods and services to troops stationed within Cookeville at various times during the war. In 1865, Mr. Hutton donated six rifles, two shotguns, three pistols, one belt buckle, four cartridges and $5 to the Volunteer Infantry Company C (now 1st Volunteer Cavalry) Regiment No 2 - Cookeville Voluntary Militia Association). The company was formed shortly after Tennessean newspaper editor John Gentry organized an endeavor to raise money for veterans' expenses incurred duringthe war. At its creation, it consisted of only men between 18 and 25 years old who had served their country with distinction anywhere throughout Tennessee - regardless of state boundaries. This group met monthly at Mr. Hutton's store until 1880 when they changed their name to The Volunteers (later 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment) No 2 (Congregational Church). In 1881 they joined forces with other volunteer regiment's from Tennessee against Confederate General Robert E Lee's army near Petersburg; this action is sometimes referred to as Battle Of Appomattox Courthouse Ridge." Many residents in Cookeville contributed items or money towards military charities during the Civil War era- some even providing entire arsenals or lives savings for their units! One example is Mrs. Anna Hardwick who managed her father-in-law’s grocery store on East Market Street from 1861 until his death in 1865.. After her husband’s death she continued running her store under her own name until 1870 when she donated all assets including seven barrels oil fuel storage tanks & five hundred pounds cheese to The Nashville Female Seminary for use as classrooms.. In 1863 she also contributed $10 towards supplies needed by soldiers quartered at Fort Donelson opposite Cumberland River .. From 1862-1865 she donated ten cotton baskets each containing ten bushelsOF rice per basket plus fifty cents worth OF salt .. She also made donations totaling $273 over a period of eight months .. During this time frame Mrs Hardwick also gave away almost 500 piecesof jewelry & 100 post cards ..Mrs Hardwick enlisted & served as Second Lieutenant Cook County Militia District #2 During operations leading up To Memphis March 8th 1864" soldier gift history
