Cookeville, Tennessee is a small town on the Cumberland River in central Tennessee. It was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1812. The town became a Coast Guard station in 1915 and has been manned by the Coast Guard ever since. Cookeville became an official Marine Corps base in 1944. The United States Coast Guard Academy is located here. The first U.S. Coast Guard stations were established along the Mississippi River at Stonington, Connecticut, and at New Orleans, Louisiana; these were followed by stations at Raleigh-Durham (North Carolina), Norfolk (Virginia), and Boston ( Massachusetts). These early posts served as supply points for American warships patrolling the waterways between America and Great Britain. In 1915, Admiral John Jellicoe activated the 1st Naval District of the Gulf of Mexico with headquarters at Cookeville as its flagship station; this was soon followed by additional commands including Flag Officer Commanding South Atlantic Squadron at Key West Florida (1916-1921) and Commodore William Halsey’s Fifth Fleet Amphibious Force Commander’s Headquarters Unit based aboard USS Enterprise at Tampa Bay Florida from 1921 to 1924. In 1934 Rear Admiral John W Foy activated First Fleet which included both destroyer Commands with fleets anchored off Jacksonville FL while flagship ships – USS Lexington (CV-2) Flagship Destroyer Squadron 2nd Cruisers Squadron 3rd Destroyer Division – patrolled near Miami Beach Fl during prohibition patrol season In 1938 Rear Admiral Percy S Hill assumed command of First Fleet when Commodore Raymond L Smith retired from service after many years as Patrol Commander for Caribbean Sea Area In 1945 First Fleet moved to Coco Solo Puerto Rico where it operated out until 1952 when it returned to Charleston SC before being disbanded there permanently in 1956 First fleet returned to duty again briefly during Vietnam War but then withdrew completely due to lack of naval capability First Fleet ended its active career on 15 Dec 1958 when it was decommissioned outright at Charleston SC Cookeville's history begins with Methodist missionaries who arrived here in 1812 looking for a new home for their people after leaving Georgia following a religious revival there that year led by James Robertson Peachtree Jr., also known as "Jack". Two years later they founded what would become Cookeville's first post: Fort George Wright on the Cumberland River just upstream from present day Cookeville proper. Cookeville is located on the Cumberland River and is bordered by Chattanooga to the northwest, Lebanon to the northeast, and Decatur to the southeast. The first white settler in Cookeville was John Cooke in 1819. A post office was established in 1821, and Coal Creek Railroad opened between Cookeville and Chattanooga on May 5, 1830. Coal CreekClayton Mine was built around 1840-1845 by J.P. Clayton Sr., one of the early owners of coal mines in Williamson County First Baptist Church served as the first church building in Cookeville proper when it was dedicated on November 4, 1827 In 1841-1842 Union General George Armstrong Custer fought at Iuka during his Missouri Campaign; after his victory over Confederate General Braxton Bragg near Corinth he took passage via Cookeville for Memphis where he delivered an address to a crowd expressing gratitude for US support which had saved his army from disaster An important event that occurred during this time period was James Fenton's donation of land across from First Baptist Church which became known as "Fenton's Corner" . From here cotton plantations were developed beginning with Fenton & Sons’ purchase of 160 acres (71 hectares) along what is now Second Street NE in 1850 In 1865 Gentry businessman John Sevier donated land east of Second Street NE comprising much of present day Hawkins Drive SE which led to development including their Sawmill & Mfg Co., current mom&pop grocery store/cafeteria complex called Sevier's later being converted into apartments following a fire that destroyed most buildings there in 1984
When the Coast Guard was founded on April 20, 1915, it had only a few officers and men. The first duty of the coast guard was to protect the coastline of the United States from piracy. As time passed, other duties were added such as search and rescue, coastal surveillance, and protecting engine boats. In 1952, Congress created the Coast Guard Auxiliary which provided support to the Coast Guard in areas such as education, research, and technology. In 1989, the Auxiliary was merged into the Coast Guard. Today’s Coast Guard is made up of over 100 components including 5500 special agents who operate in more than 200 countries worldwide.
