The church grew rapidly and soon had enough space so they erected a schoolhouse next door (now known as First Baptist United Methodist Church). Cookeville is a small town in west Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is located on the Cumberland River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The first white people to live in Cookeville were farmers who arrived in 1825. They farmed land around the bend of the Cumberland River where they built their cabin and raised crops and livestock. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson came through Cookeville on his way to fight against Native Americans. He stopped at the cabin of Ebenezer Strong and invited him to come live with him. Ebenezer Strong became one of Jackson's chief advisors during his presidency. In 1836, John Sevier founded the first school in Cookeville called "Ebenezer Seminary." It was soon followed by "John Sevier Academy," "Nathan Bedford Forrest Academy," and finally " dating back to 1865" as "John Fenton School." The purpose of these schools was to promote education for native-born citizens of Tennessee instead of importing students from northern states. After Mexican–American War victory, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered all public schools closed in Texas due to its high rates of illiteracy among Anglo-Saxon residents – an issue that would come up again during Reconstruction when black troops fought alongside whites against Indians in what is known as The Great Indian Census . In 1860, Congress gave Tennesseans voting rights which led to many new settlers moving into Cookeville from surrounding rural areas seeking jobs opportunities at local mills or starting businesses themselves. However, over time some new businesses have cropped up such as an arts center and movie theater which has helped keep Cookeville vibrant since its heyday. today still retains some of its original charm like the large front porch where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee while watching live music or reading local papers on their front steps
