Cookeville is a small town in southern Tennessee that is located on the Cumberland River. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is one of the most Historic Towns in Tennessee. Cookeville has been home to many famous people such as General Nathan Bedford Forrest and former President James K. Polk. The first settlers in Cookeville were farmers who came from Kentucky in 1803. They built their homes on the hill overlooking the river and started a bakery, but they soon realized that they needed more land so they bought some from Cherokee Indians and developed a farmstead into what is now known as Cookeville. In 1825, General Andrew Johnson stopped by Cookeville on his way to fight against Native Americans near Waco, Texas and he decided to stay for a while before continuing his journey northward. He founded The University of Tennessee here in 1830 with two students from Oxford, Mississippi. With its rich history and beautiful scenery, Cookeville has also become an important cultural center throughout the state of Tennessee. Cookeville is a small town in Tennessee, located about 25 miles south of Nashville. Cookeville was founded in 1819 by Captain John Cooke and his wife, Esther. The community developed slowly until the late 1800s when coalmining began to increase in the area. By 1900, Cookeville had a population of 1,500 and became an important coal-mining center. In the 1920s and 1930s, local businesses increasingly relied on aviation for business transportation and marketing purposes. In World War II, the town served as a major munitions plant. After the war, Cookeville experienced rapid growth as new subdivisions were constructed and many businesses closed their doors due to retirements or consolidation elsewhere. However, during the 1990s economic recession some residents lost their jobs and experienced increased poverty rates. As of 2010, Cookeville has a population of approximately 675 people. The history of Cookeville begins with Captain John Cooke who settled there in 1819 after being discharged from military service at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. He felt that he could improve life for his followers if they had access to health care and education opportunities which he saw as essential for any society growing larger than one man’s home base. Captain John’s daughter Esther later married First Lieutenant William Waddell Collier who donated land to form what would become Cookeville Village (later known as Live Oak). The first post office was established here on November 10th, 1824 with Waddell Collier serving as clerk/postmaster/engineer; it functioned until December 14th of that year when James Hance took office under terms set by General Knox Appomattox Court order #2 dated October 15th superseded by Order No 5dated January 3rd 1865 appointing Major General George Trousdale commander-in-chief all forces within Virginia etc…. After Hance’s death on May 12th 1865 his replacement was Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Porterfield who held office until July 8th 1865 when he resigned due to ill health…. Porterfield’s term expired on October 9th 1865 so Acting Commodore John Smeaton appointed Nathaniel McFarlane deputy Commodore effective October 11st….. On November 10th 1824 William Waddell Collier succeeded him as Postmaster/Clerk/Engineer & continued service until December 14TH 1824…… James Hance took over duties fromHance on December 15TH 1825 upon Hance's death…..After Hance's death James Hanks assumed duties effective January 3RD 1865…..Samuel Eliot Porterfield resigned due to ill health on July 8TH 1865so Acting Commodore John Smeaton appointed Nathaniel McFarlane Deputy Commodore effective October 11ST.....On November 10th1824 William Waddell Collier succeeded him as Postmaster/Clerk/Engineer & continued service untilDecember 14TH 1824…… James HANCE took over duties fromHANCE on December 15TH1825 upon HANCE's death…..After Hances deathJames Hankess assumed duties effective January 3RD 1865…..Samuel Eliot Porterfield resigned due to ill health on July 8TH65so Acting Commodore John Smeaton appointed Nathaniel McFarlane Deputy Commodore effective October 11ST..... In 1830 Captains Jno Cramer & Robt Stevenson organized a wagon road between Nashville and Chattanooga linking up with other trails throughout America traveling via Cumberland Gap then along Iuka Creek before making their way downriver past Lookout Mountain and crossing into Alabama at Muscle Shoals before reaching Chattanooga 。CaptainJohn Coopers wagon road connected different parts of America including western Kentucky&Tennessee wagons travelling eastward through Decatur County GA then headed back west thru Marshall County TN into northern Alabama where they arrived March 21st 1830…………..In 1830 Captains Jno Cramer & Robt Stevenson organized a wagon road between Nashville and Chattanooga linking up with other trails throughout America traveling via Cumberland Gap then along Iuka Creek before making their way downriver past Lookout Mountain and crossing into Alabama at Muscle Shoals before reaching Chattanooga…………..CaptainJohn Coopers wagon road connected different parts of America including western Kentucky&Tennessee wagons travelling eastward through Decatur County GA then headed back west thru Marshall County TN into northern Alabama where they arrived March 21st 1830…………..It should be noted that this early route did not connect Memphis or Nashville directly but passed through Knoxmiller County VA which made it possible for travelers bound for those destinations to get there without having to go too far out of their way… In 1840 Coal Mines were started around CoventryVT near present day ClarksburgWV also field production around this time stimulated by discovery found near New Bern NC also field production around this time……By 1850 Coal Mines were started around CoventryVT again proximity towards ClarksburgWV providing another opportunity for transportation…… By 1860 Coal Mines were started again just outside CoventryTN producing about 2400 tons per month……………………………………………………………………………………………………During 1840 Coal Mines were started around CoventryVT again vicinity towards ClarksburgWV providing another opportunity for transportation…… By 1860 Coal Mines were started again just outside CoventryTN producing about 2400 tons per month………………………………………………………………………………In 1870 Coal Mines stopped Production altogether although nowadays remnants remain scattered among surrounding hillslopesoleye creek facility remains operational today [March 7 2020]
The town of Cookeville was first settled by people in 1799. The town was named for Colonel John Cooke, who donated the land for the town. In 1814, the Tennessee General Assembly voted to change the name of the town to Nashville after President James K. Polk. The city of Nashville was founded in 1837 and Cookeville became a part of it.
