Military gift history in Columbia, Tennessee began with the opening of the Columbia Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 12, 1861. The regiment was organized from men who had volunteered to fight for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. In 1865, when the Union army captured Clarksville and other nearby towns, many of these men were put into prison. Some of these prisoners were able to escape and form a new regiment called the Clarksville Guard. This new unit served as an auxiliary unit to the regular army until 1866. After the war ended, many soldiers who had fought in it decided they wanted to stay in Tennessee and help rebuild what had been lost. On December 6, 1865, General John Bell Hood ordered all Tennesseans west of Memphis to arms and prepare for another war. This second Civil War began on April 9th when Confederate forces attacked troops under General Ulysses S. Grant at Corinth Mississippi River Bridge. The battle lasted three days and resulted in over sixty-six deaths on both sides. The Union army eventually won this battle and took back Corinth without losing any members or equipment. Many soldiers who fought in this campaign received medals or promotions for their actions; some became general officers within their respective armies! As a result of this victory over Confederate forces near Corinth, General Hood was promoted to lieutenant general and given command of all Union armies in Tennessee! Following this victory over Confederates near Corinth, General Grant decided that he would move his main army eastward towards Pittsburgh Pennsylvania so that he could take advantage of Federal logistical weaknesses caused by lack of food shipments following the Battle of Antietam Creek two years earlier! On July 16th1865 Grant’s main force reached Pittsburgh after cutting off several miles of its eastern border! Unfortunately forGeneral Grant’s advance party there was an unexpected ambush just outside town which resulted in six thousand casualties on both sides! Although this defeat ended any hope that General Grant could reach Philadelphia before winter set in again (he did make it to Philadelphia but failed to take advantage of its strategic location), it did give Sherman a much needed opportunity to march his army through Alabama downriver towards Chattanooga Tennessee! Sherman's march finally arrived at Nashville TN on October 15th1868!! Columbia, Tennessee is a small community located in the extreme northeast corner of the state of Tennessee. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census and 3,024 as of 2010. The town was founded in 1827 by James K. Polk and named after Columbia College in Massachusetts, which had been established that year. The first white settlers in Columbia were men who had migrated from North Carolina to purchase land around what is now Knoxville. They began construction on a cabin on the western edge of town in 1827. A post office called Columbia was organized in 1828 and served until 1861 when it became part of Knoxville. The early homes in Columbia were built by loggers and their families who came to the area during the early 1800s for subsistence purposes. By 1830, there were three stores and two blacksmiths operating within a mile (1 km) of where the town now stands. In 1840, John Cockerill erected an adobe cottage near what is now Main Street which served as his home until his death in 1865; he had married Margaret Childress about that time. In 1851, John Sevier donated 400 acres (16 ha) near present day Columbvilleschool District to establish what is known as Sevier County Park; it occupies much of present-day Eastern Tennesse including parts of Knoxville and Clinton counties. Sevier County was created from portions of Hardeman County on February 14, 1907(). In 1867, Agrarian Society members bought 160 acres (72 ha) east of downtown for $3 per acre (0·9 per sq m). This site would become known as Spring Hill Cemetery because springtime brought wildflowers to this area during most years between 1865 and 1880 (). Jeffery Ladd purchased another 160 acres (72 ha) just south of Spring Hill Cemetery from member David Boggs in 1886 for $5 per acre ($2·00/sq m).
