In 1879-80, Sevier also founded the first electric utility company in Tennessee and soon after helped found Vanderbilt University which now occupies much of downtown Nashville. Columbia, Tennessee is a small town located in Sevier County, Tennessee. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Columbia is the most populous city in Sevier County and one of the largest cities in Western Tennessee. It is also the county seat for Sevier County. The first inhabitants of what is now Columbia were Native Americans who lived along the Cumberland River. The area that would become Columbia was first settled by European settlers in 1805 when John Wilkinson purchased land from the Muskogee people. He built a log cabin on what is now his current home square and named it "Wilkinson's Landing." In 1812, James Wilkinson organized a group of men and boys to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land between the Hiwassee and Cumberland Rivers from Samuel McGee plus $5 per acre ($100 total). This area became known as "Columbia." In 1814, Alexander Moulton built a mill on present day Knoxville's Morrill Street which became one of America's earliest cotton mills. By 1830, Columbia had over 50 businesses with an estimated 2,000 employees including schools, churches and hospitals. In 1835, John Wilkinson donated land to make way for new courthouse Square which still stands today. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1865 but was rebuilt using Federal style architecture and renamed "US Supreme Court" after Associate Justice Felix Frankfurter who served on that court from 1935-1957. The building currently houses the civic museum called “The Capitol Museum” which opened its doors to the public in 2004. During Reconstruction Period (1865-1877), Columbia experienced increased growth due to its strategic location midway between Nashville and Memphis on two major transportation corridors - Interstate 40/24 Alternate (now I-40) and US 62 (now US 623). After Reconstruction ended following World War II, economic stagnation ensued until liberalization brought about increasing job opportunities during the late 20th century followed by population growth that has impacted infrastructure development throughout recent decades including: additions to crude oil refineries; new medical centers; housing developments; highways/freeways; retail stores; etc., all resulting in continued city growth within limits established earlier this century while preserving key cultural amenities such as historic buildings within walking distance of progressive urban cores across multiple stateside metropolitan areas studied herein like Nashville or Chattanooga

Columbia experienced some significant growth during World War II when local businesses developed manufacturing capabilities for war materials such as munitions and aircraft parts. In 1945, Mayor Claude Laidlaw ordered evacuation due to an air raid; however, few people evacuated because they thought there would be no attack.
