Columbia is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1871 and named for Columbia, South Carolina. It is located on the banks of the Cumberland River. The first settler in Columbia was James Hargrave. He built a cabin on the banks of the river and named it "Hargrave's Landing". In 1875, he and his family moved to what is now called "Hargrave's Ferry". They operated a ferry service between Hardin County and Decatur County until 1903. In 1865, John Cramer established himself in Columbia as a storekeeper and postmaster. He served in this capacity until 1870 when he sold his business to Jno. Waddell who continued to run it until 1893. In 1899, Waddell donated land to Antioch College which became the first college in Tennessee (later Vanderbilt University). That same year, Columbia received its municipal government from Nashville with George Stephenson as its first mayor. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to railroad development and an influx of settlers from Kentucky and other states east of the Appalachian Mountains. By 1890, there were over 300 residents living in Columbia proper with an additional 100 or so scattered throughout ruralHardin and Decatur Counties adjacent to it. The town grew quickly due to its location and easy access to goods brought downriver by steamboats. By 1830, Columbia had a school, jail, store, and two churches. It became an important center for trade and commerce in what is now eastern Tennessee. In 1839, Alexander Stephens became president of the Confederate States of America after resigning from his position as vice president underGeorge Washington.
