The Columbia Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on July 1, 1861, and mustered into service on October 16th. The unit fought in the Battle of Bull Run on April 6, 1862, and at First Bull Run on August 29th. In November 1862 the Volunteers were transferred to duty in Tennessee as part of General Burnside's Union Expedition against Confederate forces in that state. After being engaged at Missionary Ridge on December 15th, 1862, the Volunteers were ordered back to Virginia for winter quarters. On January 2nd 1863 they returned to Federal service under General George Buell as a brigade in Massena's Division of Majestic Army Corps. They participated in operations around Petersburg from February through May 1863 before finally being withdrawn from service and disbanded on June 30th. The Columbia Volunteer Infantry is one of several regiments which have been perpetuated by their descendants through various organizations such as Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and United Daughters of Charleston/Columbia Regiment Association (UDCRA). These organizations sponsor wreath-laying ceremonies at military funerals and other events to remember these soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War. The units also provide reunions for surviving veterans every year and offer educational programs about cavalry tactics and infantry fighting techniques among other things. According to SCV historian Don Armstrong, "the legacy [of] these men remains strong today."

The regiment fought in the Chickamauga Campaign and Siege of Atlanta, and Battle of Resaca de la Palma. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
Columbia is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Columbia were traders and explorers from Spain who came in search of new routes to India and China. In 1795, French fur trader Pierre-Antoine Cazeneuve built his trading post on the confluence of the Cumberland River and the Knox River, naming it "Cité du Diable" (City of Satan). After France lost its Revolutionary War against Great Britain, Fayetteville became the capital of Tennessee. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved Fort Donelson eastward along the Holston River to protect American settlers from British forces under Major General Earl VanDurden. In 1819, Columbia became an incorporated town when it merged with nearby Fentonville and Springdale. The incorporators were George Washington King Jr., Solomon Biddle (a slaveowner), James Kenedy (a banker), Elijah Pemberton (a lawyer), John Sevier (an early settler) and Ebenezer Blackburne (the first black man to own land in Davidson County). The townsite was named for James Kenedy's Creek which flows through them both. During the Civil War, Columbia sided with Confederate States of America over Union forces. A Confederate artillery battery destroyed most of downtown during a battle on November 11th 1865 while Union troops were besieging Fort Donelson opposite Columbia; this event is considered one of the greatest single defeats suffered by Confederate forces in that war. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many residents abandoned their strategy towards Reconstructionism because they found it difficult to find work or live without fear of white mobs again terrorizing their communities; some returned after various changes occurred within Tennessee following World War II including Brown v Boarding Schools case ruling desegregating public schools as unconstitutional state law required universal student enrollment thereby freeing more resources for educational purposes across all colors within state government.) Thereafter few people continued living or working near downtown as businesses shifted operations out into rural areas due to increased competition from interstate travel; however occasional retail stores remain open in central business district today despite volatility caused by global events like hurricanes Katrina/ Rita etc.). What is Columbia, Tennessee? Columbia is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated community of Postville is located in Hardin County. The name "Columbia" derives from the Cherokee word cano-pawa (a waterbuck), which means "the place where the water comes out." Columbia was laid out on October 9, 1814 by General Andrew Jackson and named for his father's home state of Virginia. It became an important trading post and military base during the War of 1812 and later served as a center for cotton production. In 1836 it was renamed Knoxville after John Cranch Knox, one of Andrew Jackson's lieutenants who had fought with him at New Orleans. The town developed around its two college campuses – Davidson College in downtown Columbia and Liberty University in nearby West Hills – which attracted educated people from surrounding counties to study here. By 1860 Columbia had a population of 21,000 people and was considered an important industrial center due to its production of chemicals such as sulphuric acid and gunpowder. However, during the American Civil War Columbia quickly went into decline due to militia action around the area and lack of support from government officials. By 1865 it had only 8500 residents remaining and most industry had moved away or been destroyed by war damage or competition from new arrivals from Ohio and Pennsylvania. However, local farmers continued to produce cornmeal, hayseed, oats, potatoes, apples (including Granny Smith apples)and other vegetables until the early 20th century when they switched to more mechanized methods because there were no adequate soils or markets for their products outside of Tennessee. In 1925 Knoxville created what would become known as the city limits which included most of what is now Hardin County excepting Postville which remained part of Columbia until 1990 when it became an unincorporated community again under county jurisdiction
