The Columbia, Tennessee Army Garrison was founded in 1802 as the Knoxville Arsenal. It was renamed the Knoxville Armory in 1866 and then the Columbia Armory. The armory was sold to the Nashville Arsenal Company in 1903 and became part of that company's arsenal complex. In 1907, it became an annex to the new armament plant on East Liberty Street in downtown Nashville. The armory Complex saw many changes during its tenure with different tenants including a period of time spent as a munitions factory before becoming again an armory. In 1984, it was closed down due to budget cuts and began to be used for storage until it reopened as the University of Tennessee's School of Infantry Studies in 2002. Since its closure, there have been several proposals for its reuse including turning it into a museum or exhibition space devoted specifically to army gift history with exhibits on all aspects from cannons to uniforms. Columbia, Tennessee is a small town in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Cumberland River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first Europeans to visit Columbia were French Jesuit missionaries in 1608. They named it after their missionary mission in India, "Côte d'Ivoire." The area that now includes Columbia was part of Tennessee until 1796 when it became part of Kentucky following the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolutionary War. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Nashville to drive out Cherokee eliminationists and Native Americans who had been living near what is now Columbia. After initial success against these insurgents, Jackson's army reached Knoxville on April 12, 1815 and orders arrived for him to march on Cooke's Mill where he was to disband his army before continuing downriver for home. Instead, Jackson halted his advance at this mill because he found evidence that some Cherokees were still living there and trying to take advantage of white settlers. He ordered his soldiers to burn all evidence of Cherokee occupancy before returning home Since its founding by European colonists as an agricultural community with strategic location along a waterway for shipping goods and passengers across the mountains, Columbia has grown rapidly into one of America's most bustling cities with over 100 businesses operating within its limits On July 11th 1865,[1] Confederate General Jubal Early advanced eastward from Corinth through Union territory towards Knoxville but was stopped short by Union General Ulysses S Grant in front of Princeton Junction just outside present day Columbia City Limits A little more than one year later (July 29th 1865), both armies met again at Pea Ridge outside present day Lebanon Hills just inside present day Columbiana Countylimits General Robert E Wayne led Confederate forces against Union General George Armstrong Custer during July 6-81865 Battle Of Little Rock Missouri At Wilson's Creek Arkansas This battle resulted in 275 Confederates killed plus 5 officers & 10 enlisted men while 33 United States troopers died . In terms of losses Confederate Generals had 3 times as many troops killed as Yankees
