Collierville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 6,848 at the 2010 census. Collierville is located in the eastern part of the county and is bordered by the city of Memphis on the north, Oakwood on the east, Springdale to the south and Chattanooga to the west. The first mention of Collierville in recorded history is from 1814 when General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area on their way to Battle Creek. After General Jackson's victory over Anthony Wayne at Monmouth Courthouse on July 16,1814 his troops stopped at nearby Turnhill Gap for fuel and water supplies before continuing their journey northeastward. In 1819 a post office was established at Collierville with J Hiram Hensley as deputy postmaster. A sawmill was built here in 1820 which continued operation until it burned down in 1865. In 1825 John Fenton acquired land southeast of present-day Collierville and started a gristmill that continues operating to this day. In 1868 an act entitled "An Act To establish Schools within The Territory Of Tennessee" was passed by the US Congress; however due to lack of funding schools were not established until after 1870 when money became available from tariffs being levied against England as part of World War I efforts to re-balance trade between countries. By 1907 there were 10 school districts serving Williamson County with 875 students each (the maximum allowed under state law). It wasn't until 1931 that Collierville had its own high school when West High School opened adjacent toCollinwood Baptist Church which served grades 9-12 then closed in 2003 following allegations of cheating involving some students from West High School.

Itdeclared itself an independent city in 1868, and its population increased to 3,000 by 1880. In 1912, Collierville passed an ordinance recognizing prohibitionism as a legal policy of the United States government. In 1932, it became one of the cities that seceded from Tennessee after being denied recognition as a state capital.
