Cleveland began brewing coffee in 1795, according to an article from Coffee Review magazine. The first co-operative store was founded in 1811 by a group of townspeople who pooled their money to buy beans. In 1824, Cleveland became the first city in the United States to establish a coffee monopoly when it purchased all of Nashville's coffee supplies. In 1916, Cleveland bought land near Memphis and began manufacturing its own coffee beans. That same year, they opened their second co-operative store which remains open today as the oldest continuously operating grocery store in Memphis (it closed in 1990). In 1920, Jesse Owens attended an event at CCU where he met Alfred Sloan who became his business partner. Sloan helped lead CCU towards becoming one of America's leading university institutions via his investment in new technology – including early computerization – helping make possible such famous schools as Yale and Columbia universities. One of Sloan's daughters married entrepreneur Russell Banks and together they founded Carr Coffee Company which still operates today with two stores located in downtown Memphis (the original Carr Coffee Store building is now part of Marriott Downtown Memphis). In 1925, Cleveland Brewing Company merged with several other small companies forming what is now known as Peet’s Coffee Corporation. This company produced some of the world’s first commercial grade espresso drinks and continues production today at their main facilities located on Perkins Road near Fifth Avenue West (just south of I-40). In 1930, Prohibition ended and many businesses were forced out of business because coffees could no longer be sold without a permit from the government. However, many breweries continued operations until after World War II when prohibition was repealed altogether which allowed them to reopen and sell coffees again without fear that they would be banned again under future administrations or laws (this also happened with other types of products like candy bars during this time). It wasn't until 1978 that Prohibition was repealed completely across all U.S states making it illegal once again for people over 21 years old to purchase any type of beverage without a special license or exemption (although there are still some areas where this rule still applies such as those within certain suburbs)). Cleveland was first settled by Europeans in 1796. The name "Cleveland" comes from the Wyandot people who lived near present-day Cleveland. The city was founded on May 25, 1836 by citizens of Clay County and others around the area who decided to move after learning that General Andrew Jackson would be visiting the area. After Jackson's inauguration as President of the United States on January 20, 1837, Cleveland became one of his many stops on his westward journey across America. In 1839–1840, construction began on what is now downtown Cleveland. This include constructing a courthouse and jail, both now gone but still visible in various parts of town. In 1840–1841, Mayor James Caldwell built another large building which served as City Hall until it burned down in 1951. When it did so, it was one of only two buildings ever destroyed by fire in downtown Cleveland (the other being Trinity Church). During this time period there were also several businesses started including Wappingers Falls Clothing Company and Artesian Wells Bottling Company which are still active today. On July 4th 1845 – just three years after Ohio Confederation became a state – Brownsville defeated Confederate forces at Battle Creek Bridge over Cuyahoga River during what is known as the Great Lakes War (also called the Second Battle for Independence). It marked Brownsville's only victory against Union troops up to that point and helped solidify their status as a border town between Ohio and Kentucky due to their location next to national borders then
