The Coast Guard in Cleveland, Tennessee was founded on August 29, 1903. The organization has grown over the years and currently employs over 1,500 people. The Coast Guard is responsible for a variety of activities including search and rescue, maritime traffic control, public safety, and coastal defense. The first Coast Guard station in Cleveland was established on the shore of Lake Erie. This location served as the primary hub for operations until its relocation to the mainland in 1954. The current station is located at Pier 12 on the city’s waterfront. It houses an air ambulance service and a command center for maritime traffic control. In 1941, the Coast Guard began providing emergency aid to civilians during World War II. In response to this need, it created the Civilian Defense Unit (CDU) which assisted with local civil affairs such as firefighting and civic security. After the war ended, CDU members were mobilized into military units known as Maritime Patrol Units (MPUs). These units patrolled rivers and harbors throughout Ohio and Michigan in support of military campaigns such as Operation Neptune’s Spear and World War III. Today, the Coast Guard operates two vessels- one situated withinalleys along Lake Erie while another is stationed offshore near Brownsville Texas- both of which are used for search and rescue missions respectively. The original coast guard was made up of a group of soldiers and sailors from Rhode Island who were called the "Green Fists". The first U.S. Coast Guard station was located in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1807, the Coast Guard had its firstprofessional dog, George Washington's Cocker spaniel, named for then-Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. In 1916, the United States brought aboard the USS Constitution a gift from Great Britain that consisted of a warship's HMS Dolphin armor plate to protect coastal communities from pirates and other bandits. In 1978, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Greenwood became the first vessel ever to carry live Cisco Systems networking equipment when it delivered 6 extra switches and 2 uplinks to be used by Customs at Miami-Dade County Airport in Florida during Operation Neptune’s Spear which served as part of Operation Desert Storm Against Iraq Saddam Hussein’s regime). Since its inception in 1917, the Coast Guard has donated more than 1 million items including boat anchors, lifejackets and hats to help keep our coast safe from danger both ashore and afloat!

On January 1, 1840, Marshall County became part of Hardin County and on June 15 of that year Hardin County merged into Knox County again. The last time that Cleveland appeared on census reports was in 1880 when it had a population of 584 people. Cleveland has experienced many changes throughout its history including two fires which destroyed most of the downtown district in 1871 and 1980 respectively (the fire also destroyed much of the originaltown center). It has since undergone many construction projects including being developed as one of the largest city centers in Tennessee and becoming home to several major professional sports teams such as the Browns (NFL), Titans (AFL), Grizzlies (NBA), Cavaliers (NCAA) and Blue Jackets (NHL). In 1827, the first steamboat navigation on the Great Lakes was attempted. The vessel, called the "Cleveland", was built in Cleveland, Ohio and sailed from Detroit to Cleveland. It had a crew of twelve and a total length of eighty-six feet four inches. On July 10, 1827, it collided with the brig "Natchez". The brig's captain ordered his men to fire on the steamboat as it approached. One man died as a result of this collision and three others were injured.
