Chattanooga is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,451 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County. Chattanooga spans 9 square miles (22 km2), making it one of the largest cities in Tennessee. The Chickasaw people were first located in what is now Chattanooga and founded a village there in 1802. A post office was established in 1805, and by 1830, Chattanooga had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his army from Richmond to Chattanooga to relieve Siege of Atlanta before moving on to besiege Petersburg; however, he was forced to retreat when Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived with an enlarged army and drove him out of town on July 3rd-4th 1865. At that point Chattanooga became part of the Union Army and continued being used as a military base until about 1865 when all railroads were closed south of Nashville due to Reconstruction efforts following the war. The city proper was founded on January 17th 1802 by James Robertson as a trading post between Stoney Creek and West Point along present day US 27/29 north of downtown Knoxville according to records kept by Chattanoogan Archives & History Foundation Incorporated This location would become known as "Chattanooga" after Gen’l Robert Ewell’s brigade landed there July 16th 1861 during Sherman’s March through Georgia during the American Civil War while encamped at Mays Landing Bridge near present day Decatur Street/Hickory Road AZ In 1809 Sam Houston set up his headquarters here under Capt John Loyd Silver Spring Creek joins Chattahoochee River just east of this spot near Court House Square which formed our future Downtown core After years providing goods for traders throughout central Tennessee “The Commercial District No longer existed When I came here about 1840 It comprised parts of Lowertowne Streetscape Nowhere can you find any evidence that it ever did . . . There are no pictures or sketches from that time extant Showing how this area looked ” The original name given for this area also included "Moccasin Bend" now called "Johnston's Ferry Landing." Chatham County was created from portions including Knoxville November 5th 1796 so it is reasonable that if indeed 'Moccasin Bend' referred only to Johnston's Ferry landing then its current name should be applied too since Chatham County took form almost immediately However even if 'Moccasin Bend' refers primarily to Johnston's Ferry landing still its current name should be employed because it has been pronounced correctly by most Americans over time
