By 1830, there were over 20 settlements scattered throughout what are now Hamilton County and Chatham County, with only a few hundred people living within sight of each other. With advances in transportation through railroads andCanal boats, however, Chattanoogan County began to emerge as a major center of commerce and culture within southeast Tennessee from the late 19th century on. Chattanooga is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 153,898 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Tennessee and the third-largest city in Alabama, after Birmingham and Mobile. Chattanooga is also the seat of government for the county of Hamilton. The first Europeans to visit Chattanooga were French traders and fur traders from Quebec in 1796, who called it "Mt. Pitt." In 1802, John Capps founded a trading post on Paynes Island near present-day downtown Chattanooga with his brother James Capps. From this post, Capps ran a successful trade with Native Americans and other nations east of the Mississippi River. By 1807, Chattanooga had become an important seaport on the Weldon River due to its position at the mouth of that river's tributary known as Muscle Shoals Creek. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson defeated Nathaniel Banks during Battle of Chickamauga at that location; following this victory over Banks, Cherokee Chief Robert Creech named Chattanoogan Bay after General Jackson in appreciation for his help earlier that year against Georgia forces commanded by Nathan Bedford Forrest at Fort Pickens on Mobile Bayou. However, when English explorer Captains Richard Harding Davis and Hugh Glass explored southern Tennessee during their explorations around 1819-20 they did not find any evidence of bayous named Chattanoogan or Muscle Shoals Creek but instead called it "Cumberland Sound" because there was then no mainland US state north of Alabama except Georgia. In 1830–31 Davis mapped much of what is now southeastern Tennessee including Chattanooga which he called "Cherokee Hills." A decade later (1840), surveyors Fayetteville attorney Jno.[John] McClernand & Co., under contract to various land speculators operating out of Nashville began purchasing land parcels in what are now Downtown Chattanooga from Cherokees living along Muskegon Heights eastward from downtown (present day Western Parkway). McClernand renamed these parcels blocks "(eastern) Woodward Avenue" after himself while continuing to sell lots westward along Woodward until he reached today's University Drive south of Western Parkway where he constructed what is today First Presbyterian Church (First Ward).
