Military gift history in Chattanooga, Tennessee begins with the Civil War. From 1861 to 1865, Chattanooga was a battleground between the Union and Confederate forces. As the city became known as the "City of Chickamauga" due to the battle fought there, gifts from civilians and soldiers alike were essential in helping to support military efforts. In 1863, General Nathan Bedford Forrest appointed General John C. Pemberton as commander of Confederate forces in Chattanooga. After reaching Chattanooga, Grant began his march northward on November 11th intending to capture Knoxville before moving on towards Nashville. However, by November 13th Confederate Brigadier General Samuel Tilden had surrounded Grant's force at Carnton Court House and forced him back fifteen miles east of Athens (TN). The next day Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Andrew McClernand attacked Grant's army while it was resting near Kingston (GA) and drove it six miles southeast into Doe Creek Valley where it stopped for the night on November 14th-15th; this event is commonly referred to as "The Battle of Kingston". With Confederates manning two bridges over Doe Creek Valley and three other small valleys leading upriver - all within striking distance of Grant's position - he knew that only one crossing could save his army if successful; he chose instead to cross over with his remaining units across Doe Creek Valley using a pontoon bridge which collapsed soon afterwards when heavy rains caused water levels in the valleyto rise above planned dimensions; this event is also commonly referred to as "The Battle of Overlook Bridge". Grant then resumed his march northeastwards towards Nashville but encountered stiff resistance from Tilden's divisions blockading his route at Pulaski Heights (TN). On November 17th an attack by Marshall’s Division resulted in an engagement at Bellefontaine Hill which resulted in two generals being killed and four more wounded; these events are commonly referred to as "The Battle of Nashville".
