Chattanooga is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 153,815 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Chattanooga was by migrant slaves who left Savannah, Georgia on Jan. 10, 1795 under the leadership of Captain James Robertson and his group of Scottish settlers known as "The Grants." They were part of a larger movement from Georgia that included some twenty thousand enslaved Africans and their families that sailed from Charleston Harbor on HMS Bounty on April 12–14, 1795 undercaptain Edward Longwood. Upon reaching Chattanooga they erected a temporary wooden frame courthouse near present day Mayo Street and Market Place before continuing north along Lamar Avenue to First National Bank building at Fifth Avenue North where they deposited their freedom money with banker John Murray over Easter weekend of 1795. From there they set off down West Broad Street to Indianola Creek where they built another temporary courthouse before returning back up Broad Street to Mayo Street and First National Bank on April 26th On July 9th 1796 an act was passed by the General Assembly of Tennessee (then called the State Legislature) establishing two new counties within Knox County: East Knox County (now MiddleTennessee) which formed east of town along Eastern Parkway; and West Knox County (now Knoxville) which formed west of town along Western Parkway. In 1801 these two counties were united into one named Knox County when land sales ended between East Knox County residents & Western Parkway residents following an agreement reached during a peace conference held at Greeneville Court House on Decatur February 27th 1801 between Colonel Robert Stewart USMC (commanding forces against French forces occupying eastern Tennessee), Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest USMC (commanding forces against French forces occupying western Tennessee), General James Murray USMC (commissioner general for internal affairs), Commodore John SteedmanUSN( stationed at Mobile Bay [Alabama]), Drury Lewis attorney general & Andrew Johnson U S Congressman from Kentucky governor’s office Although founded primarily as agricultural areas -EastKnox Counties produced mostly cotton while WestKnox produced tobacco -the towns quickly developed into thriving cities due to both industrial growth associated with coal mining operations located nearby such as Donelson Coal Mine Company Ltd., Asphalt Plant Company Ltd., Warehousemen’s Mutual Insurance Company Ltd., Chattahoochee Mfg Co./First National Bank/MayoStreet Coal mine/BroadStreet Coke mine/First National Bank building etc.; plus many small businesses dotting downtown streets such as IGA Grocery store/Mrs Perkins bakery; Biltmore Hotel/Dundees restaurant etc.—all contributing greatly to local economic development throughout its history—it wasn't until World War II when manufacturing plants moved in orVILLE WHITNEY WILSON COAL MINING COMPANY LTD.(a subsidiary company controlled by Canadian miner Wilcox Mines Inc.) began producing munitions products including aircraft parts; GEICO insurance company; United Aircraft Corp.; American Petroleum Institute; Coca Cola Bottling plant etc.—All major companies moving out during this time— Chatham Ammunition Manufacturing Co./Peabody Arms Ammunition factory etc.—until finallynetworks were constructed providing electrical power and telephone service through underground lines late in the 20th century It wasn't until 1991 when Chattanooga's water crisis led to city fathers implementing strict water restrictions that it became possible for citizens once againto enjoy qualityof life improvements including increased retail presence & job creation thanks to belt line infrastructure projects spearheaded by Mayor Andy Berke—Today Chattahoochee River Water Authority oversees all aspectsof water distribution services including fish hatchery management; maintenance & repair for City owned property holdings with more than 350 acres cultivated Rabbit Hunting Preserve managed by Trustees appointed directly by Mayor Andy Berke
