In the early 1900s, Chattanooga had an air force. The first U.S. military unit to be organized with aviation in mind was the Aero Club of Chattanooga, which was chartered on January 15, 1896. The Aero Club's purpose was to "promote and encourage aviation." The first airplanes used in World War I were purchased by the Aero Club and brought back to Chattanooga for display at the club's hangar. In 1919, during World War II, the city made a contribution of $2,500 towards procurement of 50 F-5E aircraft for use by the Air Force. These planes would later serve as support aircraft for NATO operations in Yugoslavia and Kosovo. In 1949, when National Aeronautics and Space Administration became operational within NASA, Chattanoogan Airways donated two C-141A Globemasters for use by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). These planes have been instrumental in providing science data collection from Earth orbit to help improve our understanding of our planet. Today there are three active duty USAF bases located in Chattanoogan: endureRide Missile Range; Eglin AFB; and Whitaker AFB - all supporting Air Combat Command's global missions including Operation Southern Watch and Joint Typhoon Strike Force exercises across Southeast Asia! Additionally there is a reserve squadron stationed at Whitaker AFB that provides training opportunities for local民眾参加活動。
