The town was founded by General John Sevier as a military outpost on the west bank of the Cumberland River. The name "Chattanooga" originated with a Cherokee word meaning "place where wood grows." In 1809, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed a bridge over the river near present-day downtown Chattanooga to prevent Creek Indian forces from crossing into Tennessee to attack Union forces under General Ulysses S. The Chickasaw Nation ceded their territory east of Chattooga Lake to white settlers starting around 1800.
