Brownstown, Tennessee is located in the Johnson County region of the Appalachian Mountains. The town was founded by a group of settlers in 1828. The first post office was opened in 1829. The town experiencedgrowth during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location at the junction of two Navigation Rivers, the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. In 1847, Brownstown became part of Chattanooga when that city was established. In 1870, Brownsville was incorporated as a city with a population of 25 people. It experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following the American Civil War due to its strategic location on both sides of the river for transportation and trade. By 1907, Brownsville had a population of over 100 people and it continued to grow until World War II when it decreased to just over 50 people due to the war effort. After World War II, Brownsville experienced decline as automotive production moved out westward and crime increased. However, since 2000s there has been an increasing trend towards revitalization thanks to new development projects such as mixed-use housing developments along with efforts by Mayor Jason Mays and other officials to improve public infrastructure including improving traffic flow through downtown streetscapes while also investing in renewable energy sources such as solar power Brownstown’s history can be traced back to 1828 when pioneer settlers arrived in what is now Johnson County seeking access to fertile land between two powerful navigational rivers:the Tennessee River on one side andthe Cumberland River on the other (see map). At first these pioneers were farmers though later they developed into ranchers that raised livestock, grew crops, and mined coal from nearby hillsides (Larson 1911). Trade played an important role in early life here because goods necessary for everyday life such as flour for breadmaking or salt for preserved meats traveled downriver from Chattanooga via boat or wagon train before being unloaded at local merchants’ stores on our busy main square known today as “The Square” (Thompson 1916). During their earliest days these pioneer settlers encountered many challenges; one being lack of resources which led them several years later to establish Fort Sumter which served primarily military purposes but also functioned as a trading post providing goods needed locally including flour for breadmaking (Pope 1895; Young 1909). For several decades after this fortification attempt failed however anotherfortuitous event occurred that would have farreaching consequences; navigation problems caused by changes occurring downstream brought about by rapids made their way upstream where they interacted with naturalJoineries resulting not only in serious flooding but also extensive damage done both upstreamand downstream valleybottom forests thereby blockingnavigation altogether much like what we experience today within Great Smoky Lake Basin In 1847 Fort Sumter became redundant after improved means were available allowing vessels upriverto navigate unmolested even though this area still presented hazardous navigation conditions owing largelyto rapids flowing upstream from joineries formed nearby temples associated with Hoover Dam & subsequentlyknown locally informally simply as “The Rapids”(Pope 1895) thus terminating any remaininginterestin garrisoning this site(Young 1909). This event is generally considered oneof America’s earliest municipal failures which helped lay the groundworkfor Nashville becomingAmerica’s largest city almost three centuries later! Brownsville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Brownsville is named after John Browns and his family who settled there in 1837. Brownsville served as an important transportation center for the area until it was supplanted by Memphis in the late 19th century. The town was founded on December 8, 1837 by John Browns and family, who came from Illinois. The first settler was George Witherspoon. In 1840, John Davenport moved to Brownsville from Chattanooga and connected it with Nashville by wagon road. By 1847 all of Williamson County had been organized into two districts - one comprising parts of what are now Middle Tennessee and southern Arkansas counties; the other includingmost of Davidson County (now western Kentucky). In 1850–51 James Polk made a tour of Williamson County and noted that "the people hereabouts are very good farmers", but he determined to move on because he felt that Clarksdale would be better situated for business interests in nearby Memphis. The first post office opened in Brownsville on November 15, 1853 (named Prentiss after Jno Prentiss), although mail service between Nashville and Brownsville began only three weeks later on November 29th via stagecoach with stops at Greeneville (then part of Knox) and Lebanon (now Tellico Hills). In 1865 General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Brownsville en route to take Mississippi River Bridge over Mobile Bay: during Sherman's march many homes were destroyed or burned due to Confederate fighter pilots' bombing attacks against Union supply dumps west of Corinth amassing near what is now downtown Memphis - this raid became known as "The Burning Of Brownsvil
Brownsville was founded in 1849 by General James K. Polk, who named the town after his father-in-law, Colonel John Browns. In 1859, Brownsville became the capital of Tennessee and served as such until 1861, when Confederate forces captured Nashville and moved the capital to Richmond. Brownsburg continued to grow throughout the war and by 1865 its population totaled over five thousand people. After the war, Brownsville declined slightly in population but steadily increased in trade and commerce. In 1896, it merged with nearby Chattanooga to form the city of Chattanooga-Brownsville combined Statistical Area.
