Lee's army designated it as his headquarters during their attempt to cross the river into Kentucky. The town surrendered on April 12, 1865 and was burned to the ground three days later. Brownstown (now called downtown) remained standing until 1947 when it was destroyed by a fire that also damaged nearby factories and homes. The town of Brownsville has been home to several businesses including C&H Foods (a grocery store), Post Office Savings Bank, Ford Brothers Brewery, First Baptist Church (now called First Presbyterian), and Texas Christian University (TCU). The main thoroughfare through town is Jefferson Street which runs parallel to the river and forms an important commercial artery for the community. On one side of Jefferson Street are several small shopping stores while on the other side are larger concentrations of restaurants and businesses such as Ford Brothers Brewery and First Baptist Church which have since relocated out of town or closed down due to economic decline over time.
