The Brownsville Navy Yard was founded in 1885 by Rear Admiral John C. Frémont and was the first navyyard in the United States. The yard became a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1907 and served as such until 1957 when it was transferred to the Department of Defense as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1958. The yards closed its doors for good on May 15, 1971, after more than fifty years of operation. Through its various incarnations, Brownsville has been home to many different types of warships and submarines over the years. During World War II, USS Tennessee (1940) was built at Brownsville; USS Wasp (1949) is also from Brownsville; USS Griggs (1952) is also from Brownsville; USS Ponce (1998) is also from Brownsville; and USS Littrell (2006) is currently being built at Marine Corps Base Evergreen Point in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to warships, Marine boats have also been built at Brownstown during this time period: Dragoon class boats were fabricated there beginning in 1935; Light Transit Patrol craft were constructed beginning in 1948; Landing Craft Infantry—Large were commissioned here beginning in 1955; Scoutcraft—Destroyer type were produced starting in 1959-60 and continue to be produced today In total, the Navy Yard has manufactured more than sixty ships both manned and unmanned Aircraft have been manufactured here too:EB-2B Skytrain trainers were produced starting in 1961 followed by F9F/C Panther fighter planes beginning with WS-3C Wildcat fighters in 1964 In 1966 an amphibious assault ship named Enterprise was commissioned here while other vessels have since been assigned to various commands or ports around the world including AO-1D Jayhawk utility helicopters which arrived at NAS Kings Bay GA on 9/5/2007 Brownsville waterfront features a number ofSeaward moving Dockage Storage Vessels that can store up to 50KGounds worth of cargo
