The Brownsville Naval Shipyard was founded in 1892 as a naval depot and shipbuilding center on the Spanish River. The shipyard built a variety of warships, including the USS Constitution (1797), USS Perry (1855), and USS Newbern (1873). In 1903, the navy transferred its main shipbuilding facility to Brownsville from Mare Island, California. The Navy's first cruiser, USNS Constitution Museum (1906), was built at the shipyard. The Naval Shipbuilding Command constructed USS Texas (1929) and USS Louisville (1941). In 1964, the Navy decommissioned all but two of its warships in Brownsville-USNS Moody and USNS Bechtel. During World War II,Brownsville produced ships for both European and American fleets. Some of Brownsville's finest vessels include HMS Ark Royal(1939), HMS Dorsetshire(1945), HMS Lion(1946), HMAS Perth(1948), HMAS Sydney(1950), HMAS Melbourne(1960) and SMS Valencia.(1963). In 1991, Brownsvilles last warship-USS John F Kennedy [(1991)]-was decommissioned after serving 41 years with the navy. At that time it became one of only a few ships still afloat in Tennessee that have been part of America's naval history.

Brownsville is a small town in Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area and is bordered by Decatur to the south and Johnson City to the east. The town began as a post office in 1818, but it didn't become an incorporated municipality until 1907. Brownsville sits on a bend of the Cumberland River, just upstream from where it empties into Chattanooga Bayou. The river has been important for navigation since before European settlement in what is now Tennessee. In 1797, General James Robertson built Fort Duquesne across from Brownsville on land that he had purchased from the Chickasaw people. The fort served as a military base for Robertson's forces during both World War I and World War II. In 1848, John Crayton donated land to build what would become Brownstown Cemetery; this cemetery contains remains of more than 30,000 people who died in Brownsville between 1800 and 1910. The first post office in Brownsville was established on July 9, 1818 (the date also appears on a plaque near the courthouse). At that time, Brownsville consisted of only a few logs cabin buildings and two other homes. In 1907, whenads consolidation with Decatur made Brownstown an incorporated municipality; at that time there were over 100 residents living in Brownsville collectively (though most lived close to their jobs or home). During its incorporation process, Brownstown voted to name its new municipal building "The Sun." This brick building still stands today and plays host to events throughout the year including dances and picnics sponsored by local school groups/families. In recent years things have changed around here! With all of Huntsville becoming bigger every day we've seen some growth within our borders- even if it isn't always easy to see! But overall I'm very proud of everything we've accomplished together as one community!

In 1933, the USS Constitution donated a large collection of First Amendment materials to the Library of Congress. The gift was celebrated with an event called "The Constitution Day Lecture." Additionally, the USS Yorktown donated a large amount of munitions to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 1942. The donation made Yorktown one of the most generous donors during this time period. In 1945, Commodore James Wickersham donated 5,000 items from his personal collection to be used as part of Naval Historical Center's exhibit on American warships and their crews during World War II. This exhibit was one of many that were created at NHC during this time period. During 1951-1952, Rear Admiral David Farragut presented USS Constitution Museum with a large shipment of rare artifacts from Japan's Ryukyu Islands pertinent to naval history and culture. These donations allowed NHC to become one of only a few museums in America which holds such a comprehensive inventory of Japanese naval artifacts! During 1978-1979, Commodore John McCain giftedUSS Arizona (BB-39) with an extensive library collection from his home state Of Arizona! This gift helped improve education opportunities for students living in Tucson and other areas near the ship's namesake city! Additionally, Commodore McCain gave USS Enterprise (CVN-64) three new helicopters and numerous other pieces of equipment related to its role as flagship for Carrier Task Force 8th Fleet during Operation Desert Storm in 1990! Today, many navy deployed gifts are still well received by their recipients years after they were given. For example, USS Constellation Museum has been giving away free admission all year long to anyone who brings any item they may have picked up while stationed aboard that particular ship or unit! The first settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, wheat, and tobacco. By 1828, the town had grown to include a mill, sawmill, gristmill, ferry, and two stores. In 1836, Brownsville became a station on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. When that line was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad in 1867, Brownsville became part of Nashville. During World War II, Brownsville helped build military bases in Tennessee and California. In 1945–46, it became the home of United States Strategic Air Command's Eighth Air Force headquarters. After the war ended, Brownsville experienced growth as an industrial center due to its proximity to several major factories such as Boeing Aircraft Corporation and Cummins Engine Company. In recent years it has become a bedroom community for Nashville with its high concentration of higher education institutions and professional services firms.

Brownsville became a town in 1829, and it was named for Captain John Browns, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The City of Brownsville was incorporated on December 1, 1840. In 1886, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico and renamed it the United States Territory of Texas. Brownsville became part of that territory and continued to be called Brownsville until 1912 when it reverted back to its original name.
