Brownsville, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population of Brownsville was 3,721 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Brownsville is an agricultural community and has a small manufacturing sector. The first permanent settler in Brownsville was James Fetterman, who arrived in 1819. A post office called Fetterman was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1885. In 1865, John Caughey founded Brownsville Academy which became a public school district in 1922. Brownsville was originally known as "Fenton". It changed its name to "Buffalo Gap" after nearby Buffalo Gap College (now University of Tennessee at Chattanooga). The post office was renamed to "Brownsville" on November 1, 1865, based on the town's incorporation into the Hardin County Union School District that same year. On July 10, 1927, Brownsburg Township (later parts of Greeneville and Franklintown) joined the hardin county union; Brownstown thenceforward became part of Brownsville township. The townsite of Brownsville is situated along State Route 278 about northeast of downtown Nashville and west-northwest of Smyrna. As such it has been subject to various natural disasters due to its proximity to both cities: Hurricane Katrina damage included extensive flooding in 2005; tornado damage occurred during the 2010 Moore tornado outbreak; flash flooding following severe thunderstorms that struck central TN during April 2016; and wildfires that burned around portions of Hardin County beginning December 2017 killed one person and destroyed 38 homes between late January 2018 through early March 2019.

Brownsville is a town in Gallatin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by Welsh settlers in 1827 and named for Brown's River, which flows through the town. Brownsville had a post office from 1829 to 1865. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The first settler in Brownsville was John Lewis who arrived with his family in 1827. He named his land "Brownsville" after Brown's River which he saw while hunting near present-day Clarksburg, West Virginia. Lewis owned 95 acres (39 hectares) of land within the town limits when it was organized on November 6, 1907 as an incorporated municipality under the name of "Brownsville." In 1830 John Hargrave settled onland east of present-day Brownsville and named it Hargrave Heights after his home place in Hampshire County, England where he had been born about 1790. In 1840 Elijah Bowers settled on a farm west of Brownsville and called it Pryor Hill because Pryor Plantation stood just north of his house on what is now known as Pryor Road. Bowers sold part of his farm to Jno Crain about 1850 and Crain donated all or part of several other tracts to the townspeople over time until he left health problems behind him to die at age 87 years old on October 3, 1932 at Payne General Hospital located in downtown Brownsville during a open-air funeral service conducted by Rev A P Bagby following services held earlier that day at First Baptist Church across Main Street from Payne General Hospital Chapel.) From its inception until 1965 Brownstown Township included parts of what is now BrownsVILLE - including much of current day Gallatin County - within its boundaries; however this township changed its name to Gallatin County when it merged into state government with Nashville as the new county seat upon formal annexation by Tennessee on December 1st that year pursuant to provisions set out in the Constitution Of The State Of Tennessee (Article XIV). As per Section 8-1(a) of Article XIOf TheTennessee Constitution: “The general assembly may provide for reorganization or division thereof as they deem necessary for carrying into effect their duly adopted resolutions setting forth their intentions respecting territory within said consolidated county” resulting from their decision along with Nashville’s annexation that “the City &c., comprising An unincorporated area lying Within [Gallatin]County aforesaid & containing no person dwelling therein except such portion thereof As has voluntarily withdrawn themselves From Municipal Government” On February 26th 1959 the Mayoralty And Board Of Commissioners were elected At Large With All Candidates Receiving One Vote each
The Brownsville area was settled in the early 18th century by Scots-Irish immigrants. The site of present-day Brownsville was first hunted and fished by the indigenous Tamaqua people, who lived in the area for centuries before migrating to Tennessee in the late 18th century. In 1794, a group of Scottish settlers led by John Boyd founded the city of Knoxville on an abandoned plantation west of downtown Chattanooga. In 1815, when General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he ordered all military forces out of Tennessee except for a small force stationed at Knoxville. As a result, many Scots-Irish immigrants relocated to Tennessee and Brownsville because they could not find work elsewhere in America. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell refused orders from his commanders to withdraw from Chattanooga after being informed that Union forces were almost encircling him. Instead, he fought on behalf of Confederate Rear Admiral Isaac Jenkins until his surrender at Appomattox Court House two months later. Many Scots-Irish immigrants who had sided with the Confederacy moved back into their homes in Brownsville after the war ended. During World War II, many Japanese Americans living in southern California were brought over to Texas to work on farms and construction projects following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Some Japanese Americans also decided to move into what is now Brownsville as part of their resettlement process. Because there was no legal way for them to immigrate to Texas without papers that would have allowed them entry into Texas under wartime restrictions, most Japanese Americans eventually moved away from Brownsville between 1942 and 1945 due to lack of housing or other options available there. Since its inception as a municipality within Lee County in 1902, Brownstown has experienced numerous changes both inside and outside the municipal boundaries - including annexation by Chattanooga; incorporation as a city; decline as a rural agricultural community; rapid growth as an industrial center during World War II; bankruptcy and reopening as a municipally incorporated town during The Great Recession; significant redevelopment since then; current status
