The Brownsville Volunteer Infantry Regiment was first organized in 1875, and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The regiment was disbanded in 1865, but was reactivated in 1903 as the Brownsville Infantry Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. The regiment served until 1920 when it was consolidated with other Union infantry regiments to form the 1st Tennessee Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The brigade fought in World War I and World War II, and has since been inactive. In 2006, the unit was reactivated as part of the Tennessee National Guard’s 10th Division and landed on 9/11 at Shanks Island as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. Afterameron “Butch” Strickland, a decorated Marine veteran who had served with Brownville Volunteer Infantry before being honorably discharged from service due to wounds acquired during combat operations in Vietnam, volunteered to become its first Colonel. In 2007, he was elevated to General by then-Governor Phil Bredesen for his long record of heroism and commitment to military service within both local communities and throughout state government. On 12/5/2007 Governor Bredesen designated Strickland Commander-in-Chief of all Tennessean National Guard Troops serving overseas deployments; this position is currently held by Colonel Butch Strickland Jr..
