In 1861, Bristol became one of the earliest cities to ratify the Confederate States Constitution and participate in the war against Union forces. In 1865, a new navy regiment was created at Bristol Naval Shipyard and stationed at Morristown. In 1897, a permanent navy yard was established at Bristol and it continued operation until its closure in 1903. During its heyday, the navyyard produced more than 1,500 ships. In 1940, Bristol's military base was closed after World War II ended and it wasn't reopened until 1965 when it served as an airfield for Operation Neptune's Spear operations during Vietnam War. Today, there is not active duty Navy presence in or around Bristol; however, remnants of former naval units are still present including The Naval Reserve Unit (NRU) which is currently inactive but does operate from HMS Gloucester on moored land off shoreka

Bristol, Tennessee is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 20,057 at the 2010 census. Bristol is the county seat of Hardin County and is located on the Cumberland River. It has been home to a number of pioneers who began settling in what is now Hardin County in 1819. Bristol was founded by James Fenton on May 10, 1819 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The first post office was established in 1823 and named Fentonville after James Fenton's father-in-law. In 1838, Bristol became an incorporated town under the name of "Bristol". On December 1, 1907, Hardin County was organized from portions of Knox and Williamson counties and Bristol became its capital. As part of this changeover process, all towns within Hardin County were given new charters which included powers to make appropriations for roads and other public purposes as well as to levy taxes for local services such as education and fire protection. In 1919–1920 natural gas reserves were discovered nearby and prompt development began around that time; businesses like Coca Cola (founded 1886), Ford Motors (founded 1914), Tyson Foods (founded 1923), Peabody Coal Company (founded 1902) have all had their beginnings here in Bristol today. Manufacturing production peaked during World War II with airplane manufacturer Peebles Aircraft Corporation producing more than 2 million airplanes; however since then much industry has moved out west or overseas including many heavy manufacturing companies such as Oklahoma City-based Raytheon Co., plastics producer Dow Chemical Co., motor vehicle maker Buick/Chrysler Corp., ammunition maker Winchester Ammunition Inc., cereal processor Kellogg Company etc.). Today there are scattered small businesses doing some light manufacturing but most jobs are concentrated in restaurants/bars/cafes/gas stations or service industries such as trucking/paintballing/hiking etc..
