Bristol, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 7,564 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, Bristol had an estimated population of 8,386. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area and is included in the Nashville–Davidson–Fayetteville Combined Statistical Area. The name "Bristol" comes from Old English brithalb (meaning "bridge over a stream"), which was given to it by James Robertson in 1784 for his house on Bridge Street. The first permanent settlers in what is now Bristol were three men named John Craighead, Alexander Macintosh and David McCulloch who arrived around 1800. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking the river and founded what would become Hardin County. Hardin County was organized on December 12th 1812 when General James McMillin's brigade invaded East Tennessee as part of his campaign against Stonewall Jackson and his army of more than 40,000 soldiers commanded by Major General Andrew Johnson. On January 15th 1813 hardy young Colonel Archibald Campbell led 1st Battalion Knoxville Volunteer Infantry Regiment into action against Jackson's forces at Cold Harbor Creek near present day Mockingbird Lake while under orders to capture any soldier who surrendered without bloodshed or carrying any arms inside their homes!
