The squadron was activated at Whitaker Air Force Base on February 9, 1944 as a B-24D Liberator flying training unit. The squadron became operational on April 17th when it deployed to Muirhead Army Airfield, Scotland for operations against the V-2 rocket launch sites. After completing its tour of duty in Scotland, the squadron returned to Whitaker on October 10th and continued flying training until disbanded on December 15th 1945. In 1946, the 447th Fighter Squadron was activated at Whitaker AFB and became part of Ninth Air Force. It served with distinction during the Korean War as a member of Task Force 66 which fought against North Korea’s People’s Republic of China forces. On July 25, 1951 the 453d Bombardment Wing was activated at RAF Fairford England and assigned to Ninth Air Force under Tenth Air Force umbrella. With this change in command comes a new mission - strategic bombardment of targets within North Korea by USAF aircraft from bases within Japan and Thailand utilizing Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bombers. On September 2nd 1953 hostilities ended with an armistice agreement following Operation Inherent Resolve which saw U.S.–Soviet Union cease all missile launches into Northeast Asia without any preconditions or negotiations! The wing remained inactive untilactivated again - this time due to budgetary constraints (the wing had been reassigned from Strategic Air Command headquarters). The wing re-debuted at RAF ConingsbyUK effective November 1st 2006 after being reactivated from elements of 515 Wing stationed at RAF Mildenhall UK since early 2006![1] The purpose of this activation is unknown but it is likely that these units will be combined into one entity responsible for air defence activities in southeastern England?[2] All told, there have been 21 active USAF fighter wings located in England & Wales!
