Brentwood, Tennessee is a small town located in Fayette County, Tennessee. The population was 7,493 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is a bedroom community with many people working in nearby cities or counties. The history of Brentwood goes back to 1838 when land was donated by Dr. George Wirtemberg to establish a town on his plantation called Bellemeade. The first settler, John Hargrave, arrived in 1839 and built a home on the present day corner of Maple Grove Road and Spring Hill Road. In 1840, General James Custer purchased land in what is now Brentwood from Dr. Wirtemberg for $7000 dollars. After purchasing the land, Custer laid out streets and named them after officers from his army who had died in battle: Northwest Ridge road (now White Oak Lane), Valley Forge road (now Cumberland Pike), Gallipoli road (now Hickory Hollow Drive). Cumberland Avenue ran through downtown Brentwood until it was widened as part of the street improvement project begun in 1928 by Mayor Prentice Meeks with financial assistance from then-Governor Sam Rayburn. The current main thoroughfare,. State Route 31A (), began at Broadway Boulevard near Cumberland Avenue and traveled eastward until it crossed Interstate 65 just south of downtown before continuing northward towards Vanderbilt University Campus (). The original businesses that grew up around downtown were gift shops, department stores, insurance businesses, real estate firms and restaurants such as Steak 'N Shake (). In 1956 when Interstate 65 bypassed downtown due to construction projects along that route - including I-65/State Route 31A tunneling - Downtown Brentwood became an agricultural center with machines used for planting crops such as corn, soybeans and cotton; however this focus soon changed as well when new subdivisions were developed throughout Brentwood which led to increased traffic congestion on State Route 31A ().
