They raised livestock, grew crops, and enjoyed their time there until 1892 when they sold their holdings and moved away. Around this time, local soldiers would often stop by The Hermitage on their way to or from duty. It was here that they would usually purchase goods such as food, tools, and ammunition. In 1916 the home was sold again and this time it was used as a military base during World War I. The men who lived there at that time were able to use their skills in carpentry, engineering, accounting, and other areas to help make the war effort possible. After the war ended in 1919, most of them moved back home but one man stayed behind- General James M. Robertson who served as Commanding Officer of Fort Knox from 1921-1925. He also purchased The Hermitage which became his permanent home until his death in 1958. During his tenure as commandant at Fort Knox he donated many items to the campus including a golf course (which is now part of Vanderbilt University) and an art gallery (now part of Vanderbilt University). Today The Hermitage continues to be used for various purposes such as functions for school groups or special events.

It is located on the eastern edge of the Nashville metropolitan area and is part of the Knoxville-based Tri-Cities Combined Statistical Area. The name "Brentwood" comes from a bend in the Cumberland River, which was known as the "Brentwood Gap." The village became a center for trade and commerce with its location on State Route 158 and its connections to other communities in Williamson County. In addition, Brentwood enjoyed status as a bedroom community for many people who lived outside of Nashville or Knoxville. The development of Interstate 35W made Brentwood an even more important commercial center, with businesses locating there to serve motorists traveling east or west through Davidson County. As recently as 1980, Brentwood had only two housing units; however, over time it has become home to many families who have chosen to live there because of its excellent schools and easy access to activities such as shopping malls, parks, churches and hospitals. Today's residents are proud descendants of those who first established their community here more than 250 years ago.
