Brentwood is a small town in southern Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 1,630 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is home to the Brentwood School District and many smaller schools within its boundaries. The town's Historic district, which includes some of its most significant buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Brentwood is named after Captain John Brentwood (1789-1848), an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of Nashville, who purchased what is now Brentwood Township from the Cherokees in 1802. The first settler in what would become Brentwood was Isaac Hite (1788-1859), a miller and surveyor who built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1812. In 1819, John Auld succeeded Hite as proprietor of the township and began development of what would become Brentwood Village. Ald became president of Vanderbilt University in 1830 and spent much time travelling throughout Tennessee and North America; during his travels he met with many leaders in business and education including James Longstreet, Andrew Jackson, Clay Porterfield, Elijah Muhammad – all men whom he later helped found Vanderbilt University. Ald also initiated construction of a road through what is now downtown Brentwood which connected Nashville with Chattanooga via Bridgeport Road. In 1836, Ald sold his interest in Blackburn Village to David Mays for $2 million dollars; Mays served as mayor of Nashville from 1840 to 1846 under President James Kiefer before becoming governor following Kiefer's death in office. During this time period there were several epidemics that struck northern Tennessee causing mass mortality: smallpox pandemic (1839-41), cholera epidemic (1848-51), measles outbreak (1854). Mays donated land nearpresent day Beech Grove Cemetery for use as a public school system; when it opened on September 12th, 1840 it was one of only three public schools west of Mobile Bay open to white children. By 1860 more than 400 students had been enrolled at Beech Grove Elementary/Secondary School; by 1870 that number had increased to 600 pupils. Today Belmont High School1 offers secondary classes as well as adult studies programs totaling over 100 semester hours with nearly 30 graduate or professional degrees available! The early years were difficult for residents due to competition from neighboring towns which had larger populations and access to better resources such as roadsides for agriculture or lumbering capabilities which led to rapid growth across much ruralTennessee during this time period." While other communities tried to start their own businesses or build homes on scenic hilltops overlooking waterways they quickly outgrew their acreage resulting in little opportunity or investment for new residents." Many local entrepreneurs such as Levi Richardson started successful carriage trade businesses based around transporting goods upriver along Tennessee’s river valleys." At one point there were so few proper residences being built due largely to costs associated with building materials such as stone not being readily available close by!" Although transportation infrastructure has improved greatly since then many aspects still remain challenging including higher prices for groceries shopping etc... Brentwood is a small town in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Brentwood is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. It is home to the Brentwood Academy and Brentwood Middle School. The first people to live in what is now Brentwood were farmers who came over from Kentucky in the early 1800s. They started out farming rice and corn, but soon began growing other crops as well. By 1875, Brentwood had a sawmill and grist mill and a few businesses including a blacksmith shop and livery stable. In 1887, the first school was built in Brentwood. At that time there were only nine schools in Cooke County! The first teacher was Mrs. Tryon (1851-1925). For many years, it was difficult for students to get money to go to school because no one ever collected taxes! However, by 1911/12 there were five schools in Cooke County with teachers paid by the county! In 1925/26, when Mrs. Tryon died suddenly, the first woman teacher in Brentwood Education Association teaching grade school was Miss Lillie Hodge (1892-1974). From then on until 1964/65 when Mrs. Gladys Pritchett took over as Principal of Brentwood Elementary School (later renamed Brentwood High School), all teaching staff members were women! In 1939/40 an American Legion post office opened up on West Main Street which served both locals and military personnel stationed nearby during World War II. After the war ended there was also an auto dealership on West Main Street which closed down around 1980 or so - most likely due to changes in local economic conditions caused by oil exploration activities going on near town limits at that time! Additionally some agricultural equipment stores operated briefly during this time frame before quickly closing down as well - mostly because of decreased demand from industry after technology became more accessible than hand tools & machinery back then! On October 1st 1959 – just two years after prohibition had been repealed – another grocery store opened up called “The Grapes” located off of East Broad street next door to what would later become known as “The Dairy” restaurant complex across Broad Street from where it remains today!. This store would later be renamed simply “Grocery” until its closure around 1990 following allegations of fraudulence against its owners within weeks of opening based on photos taken inside shortly thereafter depicting items never seen or possessed within their original store location prior thereto notwithstanding!! As can be seen within contemporary news articles dating back several decades documenting increasing problems with food quality & authenticity subsequent thereto extant thereby extant numerous times throughout history hyperlink herein accordingly!!!
