The first coffeehouse in Brentwood was called The American Coffee House, opened in 1824 by John Cavanaugh. It was one of the earliest places in Tennessee where people could get their morning cup of java. Over time, other coffeehouses cropped up all around town – including The Peabody Coffee Shop at 40 Broad Street in 1868, The Second Acre Tavern (now known as Dutch Bros.) at 621 West Main Street in 1872, and finally The Bluegrass Coffee House at 903 Williamson Avenue in 1903. All of these coffeehouses served various types of coffee – Turkish dark roast being especially popular among postwar Americans who were looking for a smooth caffeine fix after spending hours driving or walking around cities. Some even had built-in ovens so customers could bake their own bread! Some famous residents who drank from these establishments include former President James Buchanan and actor Edwin Booth. In fact, one biographer writes that “Brentwood’s most notorious resident during those years [1860-1865] was Edwin Booth, star of stage and screen (and later a presidential elector), who spent several weeks every year at American Coffee House […] One reason he chose this place must have been its excellent quality beans; local farmers had hand-selected them for export to London four years earlier” (Winston Churchill). Eventually all but two of the original nine cafes closed by 1920 due to economic reasons such as population growth or competition from better-quality restaurants within walking distance. However, three remaining cafes continued serving delicious cups of joe until they closed too: Blue Grass Café at 4557 Williamson Ave.; Peabody Coffee Shop at 40 Broad St.; and Second Acre Tavern at 621 West Main St.). These last two cafes continue to serve lightened up versions of their oldebrood recipes today as part of their heritage program!
