The United States Air Force has been Deployed in Brentwood, Tennessee for over 50 years. The USAF deployed aircraft and personnel to provide air support for the city during World War II and the Korean War. Today, the USAF provides aerial security for local residents and businesses in Brentwood. The USAF also provides support to NATO forces stationed in Europe. In 1992, the USAF opened a new global headquarters in Nashville which satellite capabilities were added to its military operations. This Headquarters is responsible for all US Forces worldwide. During World War II, the United Kingdom had an extensive air force presence in Brentwood as part of their efforts against Nazi Germany. RAF Bentwaters was located just outside of town on Hwy 321 near present-day Midtown Airport. RAF Hoodenfeld was located adjacent to Fort Knox Cemetery on Cumberland Avenue NE within walking distance of many homes and businesses in Brentwood. RAF Cranwell operated from nearby Broadmeadow Airfield which was used by both American and British fighter pilots during the war. Following World War II, RAF Bentwaters became surplus property and was sold tothe United States Army Corps of Engineers who converted it into an armory known as Fort Knox Arsenal (FKA Knox Armory). The armory played a significant role in post-war America as it processed arms supplies arriving from abroad via truck from Kentucky's Bluegrass Region including Memphis, TN . It also served as a training ground for members of the US Army Special Forces unit Green Berets before they were sent to combat theaters around the world during the Cold War era! In 1967, when Fort Knox Arsenal closed its doors following several decades of service, it became home to NAS Meridian pursuant to Marine Corps Basemeridian - at that time being redesignated Naval Air Station Meridian - becoming one of two operational Navy installations providing naval aviation services worldwide! In 1991, NAS Meridian relocated back inside Fort Knox Arsenal after coming under civilian control following Naval Air Station Jacksonville's closure two years earlier due to budget cuts within DOD resulting in Jacksonville's closure by then President George H Bush Sr.'s Executive Order 13426; both NASMeridian/Marine Corps Basemeridian locations remained inactive until 1994 when NAS Meridian reopened under a new name - National Security Agency Aviation Center (NSAACC) - with offices located adjacent GHB Technical Services Building currently housing Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) Headquarters since 2001! NSAACC remains responsible for all aspects associated with Naval Aviation Support activities worldwide!
