Bartlett coffee began as a small family-owned business in the early 1920s. The first Bartlett Coffee Roasters was founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Witherspoon, who operated an early roasting shop on Third Street in Bartlett. In the late 1940s, the Witherspoons sold their business to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gentry, who continued to run it until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1986, two brothers from nearby Chattanooga started a small batch of coffee beans from scratch and called themselves The Gentry Bros., roastmasters at that point for their own brand of beans only (not available through Bartlett Coffee). By 1998, the company had grown to eight employees with a production capacity of up to 120 pounds per day; however, due to roasting restrictions placed on them by their major customer base (the Memphis Grizzlies), they were forced to close down operations in 2003 after just six months of operation due to low profits. Since then, local entrepreneur Justin Cote has been working hard at restarting The Gentry Bros.' business and currently operates it as a full-service coffee shop/roastery with access to more than 100 pounds of fresh roasted beans daily!

Bartlett is located on the Cumberland River, about northwest of downtown Nashville and east of Interstate 65. It has a total area of , including . The town was founded in 1807 by Colonel John Bartlett, who named it for his father-in-law, James Bartlett. The first post office opened in1809. The name "Barton" was given to the community by General Andrew Barton during the Battle of Mount Vernon in 1775 as part of an effort to prevent British forces from taking over what had once been America's capital city. In 1812, Colonel John Bartlett donated land to the town for schools, churches, and other public purposes. In 1827, he also donated land for a jail and court house. In 1830s construction began on what would become the first courthouse in Tennessee; it opened in 1841 and remain functioning to this day under its original name (the present courthouse building was built between 1907 and 1909). In 1840s–50s local citizens developed mills that produced flour, cottonseed oil, soap products, muleshoe shoes and saddles; these industries declined during the Civil War but continued after Reconstruction ended six years later because new opportunities arose with transportation technologies such as railways and steamships came into being. As early as 1810 there were Methodist chapels in Bartlett and other neighboring towns along the Cumberland River valley; they served both local churchgoers and travelers passing through on their way north or southward across country. One early pastor described Bartlett as “a rich parsonage” because “here are many houses full of people … all classes living together perfect peaceably within God’s own sphere without disturbance or molestation from others." Bartlett, Tennessee is a small town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The early history of Bartlett is unknown but it likely began as a small community on the east bank of the Little Tennessee River. In 1827, Elijah Bartlett built a log cabin near what is now downtown Bartlett and started trading with Native Americans. He also developed a farmstead and hunted game in the region. In 1831, Elijah's son John opened a store in what became downtown Bartlett. This was followed by another store operated by Reuben Barnes in 1837-38 and then by Jno Atherton and James Fenton from 1840 to 1861. John Waddell (1820-1894), one of bartlett's sons, ran an insurance agency from his father's house from 1865 to 1886 when he moved to Memphis. After John Waddell died, his widow Margaret continued running the agency until her death in 1916. Her brother Amos took over operations after her death until 1925 when he sold it to Ira Sperling who operated it until 1970 when it passed into the hands of their granddaughter Addison Sperling who currently operates it as an historical museum which includes artifacts and tours of downtown Bartlett during its heyday as a commercial center during Americana: The Scenic Route campaign in 2007/2008
