The National Guard in Bartlett, Tennessee is one of the oldest and most important units in the state. The unit was first organized on November 1st, 1861 under the name of the Volunteer State Militia. On July 15th, 1881, it became an active duty military force and was renamed the Tennessee Volunteers. The unit has been continuously in existence since that day. During World War II, Bartlett was home to two battalions of the Tennessee Volunteers. One battalion fought in Normandy France while the other fought at Okinawa Japan. After the war ended, both battalions were disbanded but their memories live on through local history museums in Bartlett and Knoxville. Today, there are three active duty detachments assigned to Bartlett County Sheriff’s Office: one detachment stationed at Goodlettsville Municipal Airport; one detachment located at Clinton Correctional Facility; and another detachment stationed at Antioch Regional Medical Center. Additionally, there are four member organizations who support the National Guard in central Tennessee including Veterans Group 113 (VFW), Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), YMCA/YWHA/YC&A Lodge #527-2147 and Baptist group “Golden Hour” #706-19696

It is bordered by Oak Grove to the north, Mockingbird Hills to the east, and Westover Village to the south. 3 miles (5 km) north of Bartlett is US Route 411 which leads east to Memphis and west to Knoxville; 6 miles (10 km) south of Bartlett is US Route 421 which leads north to Chattanooga and south to Murfreesboro; 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Bartlett are the twosmall villages of East Ridge and Green Grass Lakes; 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Bartlett are Willis Island Lake and Nolichucky island

The first inhabitants of Bartlett were Native Americans. A post office was founded here in 1825, and by 1830 there were 116 residents. In 1831, the community charter was amended to allow for white settlement and the name became Bartlett after Colonel John Bartlett, an early settler. In 1870, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in town and it lost its importance as a commercial center until after World War II when it regained some importance due to its location on the main highway connecting Nashville and Memphis. The population reached 1,500 by 1960 but declined to 500 by 2000 due to factors including a loss of jobs in manufacturing and other industries during the Great Recession. However,Since then Bartlett has seen significant growth with new development like a new high school and municipal court complex being built as well as many businesses opening up around town including restaurants, retail stores and bars. Today there are over 100 people living in Bartlett according to 2010 census data which shows that it is still an important community with strong ties to its history and culture.
