Athanasia (or Athens) was a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Athens was James McNeely who built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1824. He named his settlement after his native city of Athens, Greece.
