The first coffeehouses in Athens were known as the Coffee Palace and served coffee to local residents and visitors. By 1838, the first mercantile store had opened in Athens, and roasters such as George Peet started serving coffee from their shop. In 1843, James A. Rector founded the oldest continuously operating retail business in Athens when he opened his grocery store at Sixth and Market Streets. With this new source of revenue, Rector was able to start importing whole bean coffees from Java and Africa. This encouraged other businesses to open up in Athens and make fresh roasted coffee one of their core products. In 1907, Jumbo Roasters became operational in Athens with two brothers who owned and operated the business for over fifty years until it closed its doors in 2006 due to financial difficulties. Jumbo Roasters is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern AeroPress Coffee production methods which helped change how people consume sweet-and-tart beans all around the world today. The success of Jumbo Roasters led other small roasteries such as Pete's Coffee & Tea House (now called Bread & Mugs) on Fourth Street to open their own cafes throughout downtown Athens between 1948-1958 starting what would become known as "The Olde Days". This period saw many talented individuals working at these cafes - some who would go on to create well-known brands such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts - while also enjoying quality fresh roasted coffee every day! The city of Athens, Tennessee was founded in 1814 by a group of Scotsmen led by Colonel Robert E. Lee and his brother, General James Longstreet. The town grew rapidly thanks to the exploitation of the region's natural resources, which included coal and timber. In 1853, Athens became an incorporated city under the name of "Athletic Park." In 1861, it joined the Confederate States of America and was renamed Richmond Heights after Confederate general Robert E. Lee's home in Virginia. After the war, Athens experienced rapid growth as a commercial center for eastern Tennessee and into what is now southwestern Kentucky. The city's industrial base declined during the postwar decades but has been revived in recent years as a bedroom community for Knoxville.
