Yankton is a city in and the county seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 9,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE-SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Yankton were Pierre Niebuhr and his family who arrived in 1881. They named their town after General George Armstrong Custer who helped lead the Union army through South Dakota during the American Civil War. The town was founded on June 2, 1881 by Jens Olsen and others from Iowa Territory. In 1890, it became a incorporated town with a population of 100 people. On October 1, 1907, it reached its current size with the incorporation of Yankton Post Office as well as retail stores and other businesses that make up today's downtown area including the courthouse square which still serves as an important civic center for the city. Yankton experienced some significant growth due to World War II when production at Wacoal Rubber Company increased from 10 workers to over 1,000 employees thanks to wartime contracts and an increase in post-war production opportunities in America. On July 1, 1887, Yankton was founded by railroads to serve the growing agricultural and mining towns in central South Dakota. The town quickly grew and became a popular stop on regional trains. The first post office opened in Yankton on November 12, 1889. By 1912, the town had over 100 residents and had built a school and grocery store. On May 8, 1916, the town's first commercial building was erected. In 1927, Yankton began serving as the capital of South Dakota Territory. The following year saw the opening of its own library and courthouse. In 1934, Yankton became an incorporated city with its own government under Mayor A.G.
