Yankton is a small, unincorporated community in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. It lies on the banks of the Missouri River and is named after Yankton Sioux Chief John Chivington. The community had a population of 561 as of 2010. The first permanent settler in Yankton was George Winchester in 1881. He built a cabin near the river and operated it until his death in 1885. A post office was established at Yankton in 1886, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1912, J.B. Dickey set up a store and grocery business at Yankton for local farmers to sell their products from their farmsteads around town. In 1916, Dickey donated land to the town for use as an airport which served as the primary commercial center for Yankton until its closure by the FAA in 1955. The last resident died at age 96 on November 14, 2008.
