In 1903, US Route 73 passed through Yankton and became concurrent with US Route 22 which ran east-west through town. In 1925, US Route 22 was rerouted south of Yankton to become what is now Highway 814 within Steele County; this route still runs through town today.

A new school building costing $10,000 was built by local citizens between 1924 and 1928 and serve as their primary educational institution up until its closure in 1976 due to budgetary reasons only five students attended high school out of a population of over 2,000 residents while enrollment increased to over 12 students by 1989 thanks largely to extracurricular activities like pep rallies/ football games etc.; however attendance did not increase above 100 students again until 2001 despite significant renovation including addition of two science labs (then housed inside old classrooms) along with brand new gymnasium complete with state-of-the art track & field facilities; completely remodeling also included replacement of all but one window throughout entire building numerous changes including adding indoor plumbing (including flush toilets), updated heating & cooling systems (now central air),

Yankton's first bishopric was created in 1895; however, it did not hold an official diocese until 1908 when Bishop George Hildebrandt arrived from Omaha. In 1916, the town incorporated as a city and began offering municipal services such as police protection and firefighting. In 1922, Yankton became a state capital when South Dakota became a state; however, it did not become an official city until 1924 when it merged with Aberdeen City. During World War II, Yankton served as one of three U.S.-occupied ports on the Sioux Nation; during that time period it also hosted displaced persons from German-occupied Czechoslovakia and Austria
